Tires&mpg: tall for tall gearing, or small for less rolling resistance?

I also run 4. 10's. Stock '96 came with 215's. Put 235's on before it left the dealer. Two years ago went to 255's and jumped 3 mpg highway and 2 mpg in town. Just ordered a six pack of 305/85/16's @ 36". Hope these will bump it up another couple of mpg. We'll see.

I assumed that you have dual tires. Can you put 305/85/16 on the rear? It seing to me it will tough the sides.

Got the Gateway Buckshot Mudder 305/85/16's on this week. They are huge for a dually compared to the 255's. Just ordered some 2" spacers for the rear from Performance Wheel and should have them on by Tues. I'm having some minor rubbing while turning in the front and will try to figure out how to remedy that next. By the way load range for these 10 ply's is 3306 dual/3640 single.

I keep wondering about the Super Swamper SSR's in 35x10. 5-16's. I heard they are loud and don't wear too well. But as fuel price's keep rising it might be worth it.

but any savings (percieved or not) will be eaten up in the replacement costs of the ssr's.



I have tsl's on my play toy, and they wear fast enough with a 5200 lb truck. Not sure they would be desired at all on a 7000+ lb truck.



And a mud terrain tire has significantly more rolling resistance than an all terrain tire or highway tread tire.

One small question are all these "I lost 3-5mpg with 35"s" truly justified with a re-calibrated speedo or just talk.

Just ordered a set of 9/11 XL's (michelin millitaries) Oo. should be here this week. I'm upgrading from 255/85R16 Dunlop muds to the 36" millitaries, hope they don't get as many flats :{ . I don't really care about the fuel prices soooooo..... bigger tires more power and heavier trailers
