Hi all,

I need 4 new tires and want the biggest knobbiest tires I can fit on my 01. 5' 4x4.

However... The balance comes in as I want them to last as long as possible - at least 45k mi

I don't really go off road... just going for looks here

So far this is what I have found - ProComp Xterrain's - 285 75R16

It is going to cost me $900 to have installed...

What are your thoughts? Can I go bigger or is that too big (I don't want it to rub on turns)?

Pro comp's are nice tires. I haven't run them but seen them several times. For a high wearing tire, I don't think you can beat the BFG's, they are about the only ones that can give you over 40K miles. There Mt's are very aggresive tread, but not real loud on the road. I have run this tire on 4 different trucks and love them. Another tire that looks awesome is the Trxus, they have an very aggresive lug pattern and wear pretty good. I realy like the GoodYear MTR's, they have a great tread pattern and look way cool also. I think you would be happy with any one of the four. Good Luck.

I think I will be going with the TRXUS in the 285/75 , take note that they are 10ply. If you tow much and want the stiffer sidewall these are the only tires in the larger size I could find with the heavier sidewall. On another note, procomp is still offering buy 3 get one free deal. Check it out here-

I was just told the TruXus tires (STS All Terrain's 30x75x16 Hesaid they didn't make a 285) wouldn't fit my truck unless I put a leveling kit (new suspension and spacers) in the front only.

He said including the Tires and kit it would run me $1,250.

Either that or I go with the ProComp X-terrains for $450 less Oo. and 2. 5" less wide tires :( ...

Opinions???

Oh and how would that leveling kit effect the performance of my truck (I tow a 21' Deep V boat and will load the bed down once in a while)?

Leveling the truck won't make the tires fit any better. The problem is the amount of backspacing on the wheels and the bump stop, not the height of the truck.

I have 315s on my truck without any lift. The only clearance issues I have are at full lock and full stuff. Since I don't do any hardcore wheelin' (that's what the Sami is for) and I don't have to maneuver in tight spaces, neither of these are a concern for me. If they were, I would go with the 285s. From what I've read here, the 285s don't rub at all.

I have the 285/75r/16 Truxus MT's on my truck and am really happy with them ,I only have alittle over 5,000 miles on them but they still look new.

I get comments on them seems like every time I fill up the truck.

Going to get another set when these wear out.

My friend has a set of both 37” and 40” Xterrains for his Excursion. He tows a 9500 lb. boat for CA to Lake Havasu during the summer and has had zero problems. The tire wear has been excellent and the traction the launch ramp has been the best of any tire he has had on the truck. If you want more details just pm me.

the wider the tire the more slippery it will be on wet pavement?

if that is so, forget the truXus and i'll stick with the Xterrtain

Noise doesn't bother me, if it did I wouldn't have gotten a CTD

I agree with your point on 3-5, Dane, but I gotta go the looks of the Xterrain on this one...

The trxs in the 10ply 285 are in the mud terrain tire, not the funky looking (but cool) all terrain tire. I looked at the STS (all terrain) but after having BFG muds on older Dodge and Jeep I decided I will go with the mud style tread. I would be interested in how the STS perform in the back woods, not hardcore just real world weekends.

I just took advantage of the buy 3 get 1 free deal & i went with the 305/70/16 same size as a 33x12. 50. pro comp x terrains & they look awesome with no rubbing. i mounted them on the stock alloy wheels that are 8 inches wide. stick with the stock backspacing & you shouldnt have any problems with larger tires rubbing. these are as big as i would go without any lift because they are real close to rubbing. i had to remove my front mudflaps. Kurt.

How about some pictures Propuller, also do you pull a trailer much, if so how big (weight)? I am concerned about the lighter sidewalls flexing when I tow, I have finally gotten away from the squirmy road sway and dont want to go back.

Pro comp AT'S

Guy's,

I've been running procomp at's for 10,000 miles now and they have been good to me. i run 305/70/16 on 10 in wide rims, and they dont rub a bit on my 4x4. thats the tire i'd go with if i was you
