Just bought new 285/75/r16 tires. Spare is a 265/75/r16 as my old tires.

Question is--should I exchange a used 285 tire for my spare which is brand new still or keep the 265 as a spare? They are Michelins--old A/S, new--M/S.

Discount Tire has a used 285 with about half tread gone; will trade the used 285 for my new 265 spare--no charge.

What does long mileage(100s of miles for instance) driving do if I have a 265 for a spare?

trade is a good idea. matching spares size wise is a good idea. miss matched tires on a rear [or front] differential is not good for the spider assembly in the diff, and it will distroy the clutches in a limited slip diff very quickly
