My 3500 C&C is due for new tires at 24k. Towing farm trailers short distances, my daily driver to work, and I'm in the mud alot on the farm . was wanting to put something wider that won't be an issue on the dual rear wheels. has the stock LT 235/80 R17 on it now. How wide can I safely go on these stock wheels? Or would I just be better off with the same size tire in more of an all terrain tread instead of the road tread? When she gets in the mud she sinks to the axel in front and I have to get a tractor to pull her out. I don't want to sacrifice gas mileage, because at 11. 5 mpg around town is low enough.

advice appreciated.

I doubt that any tire is going to help much to prevent sinking the heavy front end of your Dodge in the mud. That is one of the drawbacks inherent in the very heavy cast iron block and cylinder head of the mighty Cummins.

If you squat down at the rear of your truck and look at the narrow gap at the bulge between the dually tire pairs you'll see there is not much open space. You might be able to get away with one size wider tire but you don't want the tires to make sidewall contact at the bulge when heavily loaded. Contact will cause heat generation, retention, and tire failure.

Your local tire dealers who are familiar with the soil in Illionois farm country where you live may be able to suggest a tire that works for your application.

My Vote for tires for your application would be cooper discover s/t's. They come in a cut resistant compound as well. That is what I use on my dually farm truck. They are a good tire.

Transforce A/T are good, inexpensive tires. Rated pretty high at Tirerack.com, also. We use them on our porta potty trucks to get through all types of muddy construction sites.

Well, for single wheels on the back, you would have to upgrade to 22. 5" wheels and get super singles:

4WD and Flotation Wheels

Otherwise, go with the Coopers, they are great tires.
