Where is DOT when ya need 'em?

New CC 38EL Champagne

I know the tire issue gets old but if we didn't ask how could we learn? Bought a 2015 3/4 ton in November of 2014. Came with Firestone Transforce tires on it. Currently have 19,900 miles on them have rotated them twice and they are wore out but wear evenly. Just want a few suggestions o what tires some other memebers have and their performance. I use Nitto Terra Grapplers on my 04 and as they are good tires I don't need that aggressive tire on my 2015. 99.9% on road and 30% towing 28 ft bumper pull travel trailer. Thanks.

I've had good results with my Tera Grapplers as well. Coming from running MT's for several years I thought I would be disappointed but they do 85% of what I need to do very well and are wearing very well.

If you are looking for something with more of a highway tread check out the DuraGrapplers.

We bought a Suburban that had a set of almost new Terra Grapplers on it. They performed well and seemed to wear well (Sold it before needing replacing) but I was surprised at how noisy they were.

As to the Transforce, I bought a set of Transforce H/T's last fall. They now have just over 20K miles on them. I've rotated them 3 times, wear is even as Carl mentioned, but mine are also well over 1/2 way worn out. Very disappointing.

My previous tires were Dura Grapplers. They did well and lasted almost 50K miles before needing replacing. I guess it's the diesel torque, but I have yet to find a highway tread tire that has decent wet weather traction after they're about 1/2 way gone. I'd say my current Transforce's, the Dura Grappler's, as well as Michelin LTX M/S have all been this way. The Michelin's have lasted a lot longer than any of the others. Anyone else have better luck with something else?

The Firestones worked great in a ice storm we had to travel in in Feb. from East Texas to Fort Stockton to Midland and back. Even had the truck and camper sideways on the freeway at one time. Recovered great after the heart skipped. Looking for something to last a little longer.

I just installed a set of Nitto Dura Grapplers on my truck LT285/70R 17 126R tires with a set of Mickey Thompson Sidebitter II wheels. I am towing with these tires on the truck at 50PSI front and 70PSI rear. The ride is great and when I am not towing the rears are at 50 PSI which is even better for the ride in the truck.

On my sold truck, I had replaced the tires with BF Goodrich Commercial T/A's. They were a 17 inch tire. When tires needed replacing on our 5er, I put the same ones on it, the RV is a 16" tire. They have worn well on the 5th wheel. When time comes to replace the RV tires, in the not to distant future, I may go with Firestone TransForce, but currently undecided as to which brand I'll get. May just bite the bullet, and go with Michelin XPS ribs. Since my truck is a pavement queen, and is only a 4x2, I do not need an aggressive treaded tire. The TransForce tires that came with my truck are wearing well. I have 27,xxx miles, rotate every 7,000 miles or so, and have quite a bit of tread left.

With a couple hundred miles on my 15 I dumped the NEXEN's and installed MS2's. Had them on my 11 and this is what they looked like with 40K.

I've been using Michelin LTX M/S tires since the original tires wore out. I did a cost per mile comparison between them and some of the others posted on the forums and found that at times it was half of the cost of others. In every case, cost per mile was lower. I regularly get 80k out of the rears, and 100k on the fronts. I do not rotate, too much time and trouble. I've only been stuck in the snow once, pulling a 5er across an uncleared parking lot. No noise, good in the rain. Just last week I removed the rears with 60k on them to install on my 5er when I buy some 16 inch wheels for it.

Used Michelin LTX / MS on my previous 08 2500. When these firestones go I'll go back to the LTX's. Great tires.

I run Michelin LTX on my 2nd gen since new, and they were always flawless. I decided to give the Nexen on my '15 a try, since they're already installed. I have 7k miles so far, and I don't have any complaints other than they grab and hold on to rocks more than any other tire I've ever had, which is annoying. Then of course they flick most of them at highway speed and I hear them dinging the side of the truck. Other than that, they've done everything I've asked of them in this very short period of time. We'll see what they look like once they get up around the 20-30k mile range.

A question for those of you who are wearing the Firestone Transforce tires out.
Do you do a lot of running on gravel roads to wear them prematurely? I am getting tires in the spring as the OEM Michelin LTX AS tires that were on my truck are aging out and Michelin does not make them in this size. Through work I can get a good price on the Firestones but I'm not sure it's worth it. The truck is driven less than 10k per year.

I've had exactly the opposite issue as you described. I've been having very good luck with the Firestones Transforce on gravel roads. The last set of LTX MS 2's I had were completely destroyed with the gravel. (I got something like 24K out of them).

Firestone now makes the Destination AT in load range E in 265/70/17's. I have them one my 2007 right now and have been very pleased so far.

I just had to get a new set of tires for my 06. Last set was the BFG KO2's. They went a little over 25,000 and were pretty well worn when I picked up a Leatherman blade just off the tread. I was thinking of the Falken Wildpeak A/T3W but they are not available in the 265/70-17 for some reason. Out of stock. I went with the Discount Tire house brand, Pathfinder AT. I haven't towed with them yet BUT...they are the best tires I've driven in snow and packed snow/ice. This is my 5th or 6th set of tires on this truck and nothing else has even come close. I've been up skiing several times on I-80 between Reno and Truckee, plus around Reno (plowing is questionable). Two wheel drive has been all I've needed except for one or two occasions. Hoping they last for towing. They are a Kumho tread pattern.
