Howdy, I need some help concerning how big a tire i can fit under

my stock W250 without it rubbing. I was wanting 285's,i'm still running 235's. will the 285's with 3. 54 gears have low enough gearing?? Also, injectors don;t cause undue wear on the engine do they, i'm wanting 180 hp inj. can somebody give me a rough estimate on how much injectors and installation cost?

I'm kinda new to TDR, but I'm loving it !!

Thanks plenty

sburns,

Welcome aboard. This is a great site and there is lot's of good information available.

Sorry, I can't help you with the tire size question.

Just a word of advice, before you install larger injectors you should really install pyro & boost guages in addition a Chrysler Service Manual is also very helpful. Especially the pyro guage can save you a lot of money. Larger injectors will push the temperature up and that is not a good thing. Anything over 1250 F with a pre-turbo mount pyro is not what you want. If you fry the engine you are looking at big $$$$ whereas the pyro is cheap insurance. In addition these guages help in diagnosing some problems. To answer your questions, larger injectors will not directly increase wear on the engine. A set of injectors will cost around $350. Most of the first gen guys on this site that have upgraded the injectors are running either the Bosch (PowerWagon) or the POD's (Lucas). After the injector instal you should get the pump timing changed to between 1. 4 and 1. 7 and have the engine rpm increased to around 2900. To obtain a better response when you step on the Go Pedal you may also want to instal a smaller turbo housing (16cm2, 14cm2 or 12cm2) depending on how you want to use your truck (daily driver, lots of heavy towing, etc). By the way the injector and turbo housing install you can do yourself. A good source for injectors, turbo housings and information is Piers Diesel Research http://www.piersdiesel.com. These are just a few things to get you started.

I have 285's on my '92 with 3. 45 gears and the 5 speed, and they work great. However, my springs have been re-arched, and I have an add-a-leaf in the front. I didn't really notice any power difference after changing from the stock 235/85/16 tires. When pulling away from a stop, though, I can tell that it is geared a little high. Once I am moving, it seems about the same, plus better mileage on the highway. Hope this helps.
