In the last couple months there have been several threads about purchasing and or installing a Titan XXL midship replacement tank that I have seen and participated in. One thing that came up several times was is there a way to address the gauge accuracy and the DTE readout to more accurately reflect the new tank capacity. And in Rams programming there is not apparently in newer Fords you can adjust the size of the tank in the programming.
I bought a Titan tank a while back and just have not had time to install it due to work demands and it doesn't look like it is going to let up anytime soon at all. So I thought I would check into getting it installed at a shop. I found a local Titan authorized dealer the price for install is ok with me etc so I am going to move forward with them installing it. However while I am talking with the shop owner he asks me if I had heard about being able to know the correct dte, gauge accuracy etc. I told him no I hadn't he went on to explain in very minor detail that Titan had recently released a new product. So I went home and looked it up and sure enough they do. Looks like a bluetooth obd2 plug that works with an app on your phone. I have no firsthand experience at all with it just passing on what I found out as it had come up several times in the last couple months here. I may try it don't know yet.

In any case here is link to it

That was around when I bought mine. Unless they have updated it, they told me it requires manual entry every time you add fuel via the app. That didn't seem very practical/useful to me.

My 2017 Ram 5500 has stock 52 gallon tank and I never pay attention to DTE... when its 1/4 tank either, transfer fuel from the 60 gallon auxiliary or start looking to refill the stock tank and auxiliary.

I understand DTE can be useful, I just drove 30 years without it.

Good luck with figuring it out.

When I bought my Titan tank earlier this spring I looked a that and decided I didn't need DTE that much, and I am glad I didn't buy it. I like driving with my phone tucked away in the center console and use CarPlay.

In anticipation of getting a Titan I stopped using DTE last Novemeber and haven't missed it yet. I had it on my 05, bought in 07, but it was never accurate enough to count on and the 18 wasn't much better. Now I just do what I did for years, and do on my other rigs... watch the fuel gauge.

Also, I am not sure how accurate the gallons remaining would be since the fuel sender is at 100% with 45 gallons in the tank so there is no way to monitor the 1st 10 gallons being burned.

It seems like all vehicles I've owned move down slowly to 3/4 and 1/2 tank, then faster down below that. Older manufacturers explanation was/is fuel gauge is calibrated to meet customer expectations... Part of getting acclamated to each vehicle is the process of learning that relationship.

With 112 gallons and 33Klbs, I run OEM 52 gal tank down to 1/4, then open drain valve and run to half, then look for fuel using Gas Buddy. We stop about every 2 hours to stretch, let the dogs have a break. If I see a really good deal on fuel and I've used 60 gallons, I'll top off early.

Anyhoo, good discussion on carrying more fuel.

Cheers, Ron

Not to change the subject but does anyone have a in bed transflow tank..I am wondering how hard it would be to remove it since its wired in to automatically fill the oem tank.

You should start your own thread as it's a different aftermarket brand.

The TransferFlow tank setup you likely have is spliced into the OEM fuel sender wiring somewhere. Follow the fuel tank level sender wires from the tank to see where the TransferFlow wires splice in. Simply undo the splice and reconnect the OEM wires back the way they were. (Generally remove splice and connect OEM wire back together.) This should be the ONLY single wire of concern. The rest of the wires are for power, aux pump, aux level, ground, and it's display. And they only matter to the TransferFlow stuff. Again only the fuel level sender tap is the only mod to the OEM wiring made.

Removing it's fill hose from the tank vent is really the hard part.

The Titan dealer here wants $1550 for the tank and $450 for installation. Thinking about the transflo or gravity feed tank in bed.

I have the Titan 52 midship in my ‘16 and have had it since just about when the truck was new. My DTE is pretty accurate. The fuel gauge stays on “F” until the extra 20 gallons in the Titan gets burned then will drop towards “E” as one would expect the gauge too. The DTE reading will stay constant and will even increase some. Once the fuel level drops to 32 gallons or so, the DTE will then be accurate. Towing our fifth wheel DTE shows about 500 miles to empty. Non-towing will show anywhere from 750-850 depending on terrain, speed, etc. I also have kept paper records of DTE, fuel used, mpg, fuel gauge position and find the DTE is pretty accurate.

Must be the difference in your short bed. My long bed stays on F until I’ve burned thru 10 gallons and then starts to move. DTE has not been accurate once since I installed the tank as the “known” amount never matches the actual volume. For fun I look at it every now and then, but after reading your post Sunday and driving 600 miles since then I’ve watched it a little more. Mine is still squarely in the useless column.

Right now DTE shows 280 miles, the gauge reads just above 5/8 and the Edge CTS2 says 74%. Based on my notes there are about 32 gallons in the tank. 74% of the OE volume is 24 gallons which matches the DTE much better. At my current average I’ll get at least 100 miles more than it’s guess.
