Has anyone ever watched this program on The Learning Channel?

2 Teams have a certain time limit to build different contraptions from just junk yard parts.

Very interesting show. Its worth a watch. The guys that build these things are no dummies. Its amazing what they can do.

Tonight @ 9:00pm is "hotrods". At 10:00pm is "ballistic Missles" #ad

<font color=blue>I have seen 3 episodes.

The Steam powered vehicle, the wheat harvesting vehicle, and then the dragsters.

They are hilarious to watch.

A couple of weeks ago I sat glue to the tube while they showed all the episodes from last year. Very cool stuff. Wish they did that here. I'd be game

I liked the episode when they had to build a Cannon and the military guys launched the barrel of theirs instead of the projectile.

Funny thing about that show is how mysteriously, they find pristine parts to use. Kinda like when they found that new roll of Mylar in the trunk of a car.

The guys who built the pumpkin cannon really blew it. They should have leaned it all the way over and drove the pumpkins through the walls.

The guys with the trebuchet made the thing way too complicated. All they had to do was throw 6 pounds of pumpkin 50'. That could have thrown 60 pounds of stuff 100' or more!

There's a neat piece of film where some rich guy in the UK built a BIG trebuchet and threw a piano about 200'. The piano flew pretty good, but the landing was pretty bad.

I couldn't believe only 20 PSI of air pressure in the cannon to launch the pumpkin.

See the small standard transmission they had rigged to the bicycle to compensate for the load. #ad

How did they know the engine in the Oldmoblie even ran before spending all that time & effort pulling it?

See they pulled the water pump on the V-8?. Don't need a cooling system when it will only run for a minute at a time. #ad

I`ll bet after 10 hours ,those guys have to be exhausted.

I remember reading in Car & Driver magazine about some guys building a bigger one. Lauched a Fiat as I recall.

I wonder just how 'spontaneous' the show is.

A few weeks ago, they did the folk in the UK building machines to launch a football. One team deciedes on a ballista, the other an air cannon. The US teams go over and they pick, a trebuchet and an air cannon. Both times, there happens to be an expert on each.

Both US and UK dragster teams build a big v8 monster and motorcycle-based machine. It was real interesting how both motorcycle teams found what looked like the same set of bearings, that jst happened to fit the shaft and had convienient mounting hardware aleardy on it.

But, the blonde cohost/producer is cute, so who cares if it's not 100% spontaneous.

Lets face it, a Junkyard does not have everything known to man that would be needed for a certain project. They do seed the junkyard, but they also take things out that might make a job too easy. This show is geared to kids ages 7-14, and it might not be so apparent to them. The show wouldnt be that good if no one was able to finish the project for lack of a critical part.

Speaking of pumpkin launching, saw I program on the Travel Channel about a pumpkin launching competition that takes place yearly in the south east. Some of the launchers have barrels over 40 ft long powered by diesel air compressors, the record launch is well over a mile. For the target shooting part of the competition the target is a VW van, pretty amazing how much damage a pumpkin can do to a VW.

Granted its probably not completely spontanous, its still hilarious. And each team will always have 1 Expert, its set up that way.

Here a link for the N. E. R. D. S. who where the first US team on the show.
http://www.the-nerds.org/

They talk about the seeding of the junkyard and verious other things that go into the show. The show now has two version, one for the UK and one for the US. It is a great show and I have thought about signing up for it if I could find a team.
