Good day to all. I have a 02 6 spd and the motor is going should i put a new one in or get a new truck the 02 has 689,000 km on it and alway was working hard. with pulling. So what is your thoughts?

Stick with your 02, a better truck and engine than the 3rd gen. More reliable.

A "good" full rebuild should get you another 600km

Less electronic controls than the 3rd gen. Better cast iron cased transmission than the new g56. Easier to find and come-by dana axle parts. Non-hydroformed frame (can be welded on)... . Has rear discs like the 3rd gen... .

Wow boy do you drive a lot. Never heard of anyone driving that much

I would get a new truck If I drove that much or at least another truck. I would think that truck Is wore out. I don't know how you stand financial. If I drove that much I would put money away each month so when It came time to replace there was money for It.

That more miles then my wife drives. That would be 638 miles

a day. wow. 638 miles a day base on 3 years 230,000 a year divided by 12 =19,166 a month then 30 days =638 miles a day. My body could not take that very long. That got to be the worst job there Is.

I'd go insane. Plain an simple. I'd be bald, or severely graying for a 21 year old and I'd probably be in jail because "people" (read: everyone that drives around me) **** me off and I'd probably shoot someone/something.

I'm a magnet for idiots. Maybe you're lucky.

Actually, he said KM. that equal to about 428,000 miles.

thats 142,000 a year.

11,888 a month.

about 400 miles a day!!!!! thats a long way to drive everyday...

Personally, I'd go ahead and replace the truck. at 500,000 miles, a lot of the parts are prolly worn out. I love the 2nd gens more than the 3rd, but just for sake of reliability, I'd buy a new one.

only problem is, yours is not worth much now, with that many miles and a toasted motor... .

If the rest of the truck is in good shape, a motor is alot cheaper than a new truck. And with as many miles as you are putting on it, the 06 won't be worth much in 3-4 years either (assuming it holds up as good as the 02).

Like they say - the devil you know than the devil you don't... ;) Besides the 02 is much better looking. :D

i bought my truck for the motor/trans/drivetrain. the rest of the truck is just the wrapper it came with! if the rest of the truck is in good shape, i'd be inclined to replace/rebuild the motor and go through the trans/t-case/axles/u-joints... lots of miles, but not too much calendar time on the wrapper.

tough call! and i'd agree that financial situation would be way up there in the decision making process.

well I do a lot of work for the oilfield companies and yes when it come to a new truck I have to bite the bullet when it comes to financing it. a short trip is 350 km and than I run in to your neck of the wood. I drive to Texas twice a month and it is 6500km round trip

By your signature it looks like you have the truck set up for your use / how you like it. That + the devil you know - I'd get a rebuild. Probably just needs rings, bearings and valve work. Have you priced the rebuild yet?

the rebuild isnt as bad as most people think. cummins runs sales regurlarly (at least mine) on the b rebuild kits. as long as the block isnt damaged or in need of machine work. because if it is than its cheaper to buy an engine than rebuild. which is a good option. a completer b isnt that expensive and has a good warranty, from cummins, not dodge. dont bother with a long block or shortblock though, rebuild or buy complete. especially with the miles, complete is probably better. you weld get a new fuel pump turbo and injectors

How much does a B series rebuild kit run in price and what is included?

Machine work on a good seasoned block would be less than 500 buck... .

I vote on rebuilt vs. expensive new engine from cummins, you can build it tighter than they do anyways.

I heard that most cummins with 250k miles barely have ring wear :)

well depending on what happened to it. most of the ones that I see (I ama service administrator for cummins metropower) have scored blocks. and if you are doingit yourself this is one thing. if a dealer is doing it, the labor costs are not worth the difference in a complete engine. which are actually within a couple hundred dollars. and like I said you have to figure in that you get a new fuel pump and lift pump, turbo and injectors. which add up when rebuilding. right now our 6b overhaul kits which include, rings, retaining rings, rod bearings, main bearings, upper gasket set, oil pan gasket, and pistons. for 1133. 92$

good day all. Well I got the truck back I went and got it rebuild and it is like new. the motor and the trans cost me a total $18,000 canadian. the motor was $10,000 and the trans was $8,000. I think it was well worth it. A new truck would cost $52,000 plus the cost to rig it up would be $15,000 and then I would only have a 10 deck. When I get the new computer I will put on some pics of the work horse. They put the truck on the dyno and she ran 786. 6 f/t and 244. 2 h/p and that is stock. :)
