I've recently and suddenly developed a major external coolant leak in the head. :{

I may need to move the truck 150 miles for repairs. I'm wondering if some Bar's leak might plug the hole, or if the repercussions from it would not be worth it.

Anyone have a success story with Bar's Leak in their Cummins?

We used to use Barr's Leak in our Cummins powered tractor trailers as a matter of routine additive, much like what Ford recommends for the Navistar.

Another product to consider, if it is still available and you can find it is Copper Seal. It works very well also.

The problem with any additive is the residue you get in the bottom of the radiator. We always had to have the engine to operating temperature so that the thermostat is open and the stuff get's to where the problem is.

You might have to cover the radiator to build heat or remove the thermostat so that you are getting circulation.

The old radiator guy here used to really hate Bar's because of the radiator deposits.

I have another radiator to put in, I was concerned about things like heater cores and coolant passages.

I wouldn't use Bar's Leak like said before it's just to gummy and will plug more then you want pluged up. Aluma Seal works good and Copper Seal but I havn't seen it around for a long time. The Alum Seal you can get at any Auto store.

I'd be concerned with clogging up the heater core. You may know that to replace one involves removing the dash . . . If you have to use some additive you should consider disconnecting the heater core - bypass it. disconnect both hoses and get a "jumper hose" to recirc back to engine. You might freeze your tucus off but, at least the heater core will survive. MHO - Good luck.

I used both Bar's Leak and Alumi-seal with good results. If you have to run the truck loosen the rad cap and you may not leak at all or at least less. I would try this before the stop leaks.
