To Rhino-liner or Not To Rhino-liner??

My dodge 3500 needs a paint job badly. The cheapest but quality paint job I can get is $2000. I got a quote today to rhino liner the whole truck for $1000. I was thinking of doing it in bright red. How do yall think it will look? I wonder if there is anything I can spray on there to give it a clear coat finish. The actual type of bedliner is Reflex.

Don't know anything about Reflex, but I am very happy with my Rhino Liner. I have heard of jeep and off-road people doing an entire vehicle in this stuff. Toughest finish I can imagine, good luck scratching it. If you don't mind having a "textured finish" on your rig, I'd say go for it. Beats looking at rust. I don't think you can or should apply anything over the top of these spray on liners. Whatever you spray on will undoubtably be more brittle and tend to flake off as the liner material flexes and expands/contracts with temperatures. I'd say, if the rig is ugly, shoot the whole thing and forget about it. Sounds like a good idea for replacing a messed up finish with a tough solution.

Define 'the whole truck'.....



If you can get every body panel coated for $1000... that's a bargain.



Be careful about the overspray, though... I've seen a few trucks that had sprayed-in bedliners poorly done. A few of them had some overspray in places that made the truck look pretty bad.

The neighbor had his white dually Rhinoed on the body. Lower door panels all the way to the rear bumper, some of the hood & fenders. IMO, looks like S.



When it's new, it's shiny, kind of, no where as nice as paint. It fades.



Another thing ... that stuff is heavy! Great to paint the inside of an off-roader / racer. If you don't mind the weight penalty, it's also a good noise silencer.

I can't image a decent job being done for only $1000. I was quoted that for just the rockers. Prep work is the most important part of the application. If they scewed that up, you would never get the stuff off again. Also, if you did have to get some body work performed in the future, this would also add to the cost for the extra stipping. I believe there were some pictures of a truck that was entirely coated in the Rhino Lining over at their website. Might be cool if you were really into driving around in the brush. Just my thoughts.

After searching forums about rhino and X-line I had my flatbed X-lined. I like it. At the shop in ID Falls they had a Furd Bronco (yellow and Black) and a Jeep (red) completely done in X-Line.



All I can say is IMHO, yuck



But to each their own, neh?

The only thing I that bothers me is there is no clear coat finish. So it will look like a flat color which is a bummer. Another problem is the stuff will be extremely difficult to get off if I ever tried. I got it down to a $1000 b/c I would let him put his name on the lower rocker panel.

I've been told that Permatech will never dull nor fade like the RhinoLiner. My RhinoLiner looks pretty gray after a few years.

I have the Permatech and it still looks great after almost three years. I've put that stuff through a beating, and it has been holding up. The color hasn't faded at all and the truck lives outside. When I first got it, I was a bit supprised because it didn't seem as thick as some of the trucks I saw with the Rhino-liner, but I've had zero problems. The texture of the Permatech is not as stiff as the Rhino-liner - seems more like rubber then plastic. To spray the bed cost me $500 and it took them a day to do.
