Friend has a 93 and is trying to figure out how to take some of the spring out of the footfeed. His leg gets sore driving it. ANY SUGGESTION?? I did a search and only found one answere about an out of stock mod.

The pedal may be hitting the carpet. This situation makes for increased effort to push the pedal down past 1/2 throttle or so. I had the same problem on my truck, so I took out the pedal and bent it upward some. Now it won't hit the carpet even at WOT. I've read of others using some washers or a spacer at the top of the pedal where the cable attaches to gain some more travel that way.

If the truck is an auto, then there is the throttle valve cable which goes to the trans. The feedback from this cable increases as speed and engine rpm increases and makes for a stiffer pedal feel. As far as I know there isn't a way around this one. Just make sure it's adjusted properly so the trans shifts right.

Cheers,

Sean

There are a couple of areas that cause the throttle to be really stiff. The TV pressure cable tends to get dirty and gummy on the inside and bind. The best way to cure it is take the cable completely off, clean it out with a spray cleaner, then relube it with a graphite based lube. While the cable is off check for fraying at the engine end of it. There is a boot over where the cable goes into the housing that covers a fraying problem. When it is off you can pull the cable both ways and check the ends for wear.

The other problem could be the the bell crank where all the cables and rods hook up. It a cheesy design and if the TV cable is dirty it will cause problems there also. The bell crank is returned by a spring the rides on a nylon bushing. The spring coils tend to cut into the nylon and jam requiring a lot more pressure to open the throttle. There is a replacemnt spring and bushing available from the dealer that will get it working freely again. Sorry don't have the numbers for the parts.

While your at it lubing the throttle cable and checking it for fray is also a good idea. My truck was the same way, give you cramps driving it very long and could not get full throttle. After fixing the above its a whole new experience when driving. Oh, and the cruise will set and hold correctly now.

Hi Milt,

The guys have covered the TV end of this pretty well as it is... let me add one more thing...

The TV cable needs a spring at one end or the other, either on the throttle end or the TV arm on the transmission. It is responsible for assuring that the thing returns to "full forward" position.

In my case my spring was too stiff and I had the same "foot cramp" symptom as you describe. First thing to do is go with the removal, cleaning and lubing.

I strongly agree with the graphite lube idea too...

Since the powdered graphite can be a tough to get it all the way down and around the inside maybe I can help with that too...

I have some graphite lube in liquid suspension kicking around I think. If you want to send me your full mailing address/phone #, I'll go look in my "god help me" parts boxes for the stuff. If I have it, I'll send some along to you N/C.

When applied, it dries completely leaving only the graphite lube in place.

Let me know and I'll see if I can find it...

Oh, ok, I just know I have some kicking around here. It was for use on a boiler at a pulp mill... .

It's the thought that counts... . or so my wife says... . :D
