Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) to think I gave up a perfectly good 12 valve for this!

I'm seriously considering having a fire sale on this truck,you suppose it would be suspicious if I took all my stuff out just before it caugt fire? Anyone with any bright ideas I'd like to hear them. It developed a once in a while stumble/surge and has slowly gotten worse,and more regular. Eventually it set the MIL lamp and showed codes 370,1691,1693. After much reading and talking to people that know more than me we decided to change the injection pump,it didn't change a thing. It seemed to be throttle position sensitive so I put on a APPS to no avail. on a long trip this weekend all was well untill the last 200 miles,it would buck and carry on for 8-10 seconds and then be fine for a while then do it again. It shows codes 1693,1691, and 1689 and it feels like the injection pump is going wide open,then shut -back and forth way faster than you could do with your foot,and today I noticed it was puking out lots of black smoke when it acted up. fuel preasure was steady,nothing else noticed and when it's ok it runs great. Any help would be appreciated. Jim

Try pulling the EZ box off and see if it goes away.

Could be a loose connection somewhere. Had a something similar happen on a Mack truck at work.
