I have been giving alot of thought to a 14 housing for my '96. I use the truck for daily transportation (100 miles a day) and towing most weekends. I hear that a 16 will kill my bottom end so I am looking at the 14. What are the pros and cons of wastegated or not. I like the price of the non gated that will put me closer to another cam plate sooner. I need some advise I hate to throw parts at it that will not work together. Thanks in advance

turbo

I just purchased a 14cm non-wastegated exhaust housing for my 96 ctd. The non-wastegated 14cm there will be very little turbo lag and 15 to 20 more horsepower on top end!!:D :D Oo. Oo.

Ok Lets take this a little further... What would the benefits be from one to the other????

Should it be wastegated?????? Or not???

more fuel?

are you going to add more fuel?/cam plate?

if so just get a 16nw dont waste your time and $ on a 14. the fuel addition will take away any lagggg!

with a 16 :D

cooler egt's and more power at top end esp. when you tow on weekends.

wastegate?

I have to agree with Pthomas. You should be adding more fuel if you're gonna go up to the 16, then there won't be any difference on the bottom end, but what an improvement on the top, plus lower EGTs & more power. I've got the 16 non-wastegated on a Piers HX-35 custom turbo and it is far superior than the stock unit. Spool up is very fast, and EGTs are about 100 degrees lower while towing.

Like you, I drive the truck daily to work, but pull a big rodeo rig all weekend, grossing about 22,000 lbs. At 75 mph on the flats, I'm running about 18 psi boost at 800 degree EGT pre turbo. Before, I would run about the same boost, but 925-950 degrees. It runs free-er. No real mileage increase towing (10 - 10. 5 mpg), but I have noticed an increase on my unloaded highway mileage, which is up to about 20 now, from 19.

At any rate, you need a fueling plate to benefit from the larger housing.

What about the wastegate part????? What is the best road to take as far as the wastegate or not??? Someday my plans include a #11 plate and after that down the road a set of injectors. . With adding the injectors I will need a housing to keep things cooler but does it need to be gated or not... . this is the question... .

wastegate

Sorry. It is implied that the 16 is non-wastegated and the 14 is wastegated. I guess there are different versions of each size. My oversight.

If you haven't added fuel, I don't think you need any change at all (above the 12cm wastegated housing). If you've added a little fuel, and like to race around town (quick spool-up is a concern), get the 14 wastegated housing. I think you need to wastegate this housing or else EGTs will be too high at heavy throttle, especially when towing. If you mostly tow, and have added modest to significant fueling, go with the 16 cm non-wastegated. I can't see that you would want a 16 cm wastegated housing. I've not even seen one, although I'm no expert at all models/offerings.

The bottom line is, there is no "one-size-fits-all-does-all" turbo/wastegate combination. Some have done a good job at giving good spool-up/decent top end breathing, but unless you want to spend a ton of money on a dual set-up, decide what you do most, and maximize it. If you tow mostly, and have added a lot of fueling capability like me, the 16 non-wastegated has been the perfect ticket.

I do tow at least once a month. . and to date I have not added any fuel. The route that I when I do tow is approx 60-70% hill

pulling ranging from 4-7% grades. This is what I will upgrade the truck to do. Our new trailer has a GVWR of 11,000 so this is the driving force of future upgrades. The truck pulls the trailer now but not like I want it to.

I have a small Banks kit right now (Git Kit) wastegate accuater and cam plate. I do not know what this is equal to in a TST somebody said 11 but I cannot tell you. Alot of people say a 10 is good for towing with a five speed. If this sounds right I may try to buy a 10 plate. What housing works best with a plate only. I do not plan on injectors until I have trouble with what I have. Maybe someday I can play harder with this truck but not now.

supergas, Banks used #10 plates for 5 speeds of your vintage, the #11 was for autos. They recommend a 14cm wastegated turbo for that setup, but you can get by without one no problem.
