The Texas Dept. of Transportation (along with the Texas Turnpike Authority) has undertaken a project to turn roads/highways completed and paid for with tax dollars into toll roads. This has begun in earnest in Austin, Texas. I have a good friend who works at TxDoT and he advises me that turning the already built 'freeways' into toll roads in Austin is the 'national model' for all other cities in the US of A.

This scheme has been fast-tracked in Austin. You can expect it to happen in your city within the next five to ten years.

They're trying it with a completed section of TX 249 (Tomball Parkway) here in the Houston area. They have a full-fledged citizens' revolt on their hands, however. It's turned into a real firestorm!! :-{} :-{}

Yeah Rusty, there was a firestorm in Austin too, but that didn't faze them in the least. They went blazing right on ahead into the overwhelming, howling opposition. They have an agenda and they are sticking to it. There is even a movement for a recall of the culpable politicans, yet the juggernaught continues unabated.

There may be a recall effort in Houston, but I am unaware of it. In Austin, the recall is focused on local, not state, officeholders, such as the mayor, sh!tty council members, county commissioners, etc. that were in favor of this nonsense. Apparently the ire of the citizenry has no effect on them.

You have to realize, short of stringing up the b@stards, this 'toll road' agenda is mostly unstoppable and it is going to happen, regards of a groundswell of opposition from the people.

Ours hasn't gone through yet. It has to have the approval of Harris County Commissioners' Court. We're lobbying our Precinct 4 commissioner hard (TX 249 lies in his precinct), but he doesn't have a record of giving a hoot in heck about what his constituents think. Our state senator and state representative are yelling that it's wrong, but it wouldn't surprise me if they didn't vote for the bill that empowered TxDOT to turn these highways into toll roads. :mad:

So your going to pay more for a road that you've already paid for and are continuing to pay for in road taxes on Gas and Diesel plus pay a toll? Time to repeal the federal road tax from gas and diesel.

How in Hell**** is it legal to turn a road paid for with tax dollars into a toll road????
