I know that the tone ring mod advances timing just a bit, so can one consider the tone ring mod to be a "poor mans" Rokktech or Smarty? I have been considering the tone ring mod, it seems like a pretty easy and cheap mod, but obviously, I am a little hesitant to tear apart an engine on a $30k+ truck and start grinding away on zero-tolerance parts. From posts that I have read, it sounds as if the 4 bolts and tone ring are actually an external part? How about the dowel pin? Any info would be appreciated.

Roktek or Smarty?

Those are two completely different things...

Smarty is a programmer = 170 HP

Tone ring mod or Roktek advances timing 2* = maybe 10 HP

I would say if you dont want to cut on your truck, just buy a Roktek sensor and be done with it.

Thanks for the input, I wasn't sure if the Smarty did something with the timing. Horsepower is definitely not what I am looking for. My transmission would never hold up. But a little better MPG's are never a bad thing.

Smarty does add timing and a very good MPG increase with a light foot. I had my Roktek before everything else and saw about a . 5 mpg increase. When I added the EZ it went up about 1 more mpg and the Smarty took me about 2 mpg on top of all that.

If you just want MPG and dont want to spend a lot of money, just buy a Quadzilla XTZ module. The XTZ is a timing and pressure box that is not dangerous, and it adds 65hp. The box sells for like $300 new.

Hope this helps you out bud :D
