Just wondering if anyone is experiencing a lot of dust inside the bed on dusty roads with the tonneau cover closed. Don't remember having an issue with my previous truck with the same tonneau cover closed. Its coming up thru the tailgate, and the plastic covers on the fifth wheel prep. Everything I put back there is covered in dust. Mine is the 2014 Megacab 3500.

I think the culprit for me is the hole in the bed for the gooseneck hitch. It has a vinyl cover for the cap, but it's not air tight.

Its looks like someone dumped powder of some kind all over everything,. Its actually a mess . A lot of it is coming up thru the bottom of the tailgate, thats where its the deepest so to speak. Just can't remember having such an issue with other trucks. Will just cover with a tarp to keep the dust off the camping equipment

Is your tonneau a soft cover or hard cover? Does it cover the stake pockets?

Its a soft cover TruXedo. No does not cover the stake pockets, but they don't open up inside the bed. I rolled the cover up ,and looked inside where the tailgate meets the bed, and there is no way dust can stay out. The bottom looks fairly tight, but the sides towards the bottom have a lot of space between them and the tailgate . Looking down from the inside you can actually see the ground .
I'm afraid it is what it is.

Things stay clean and dry back there, at least so far!

I don't think its getting in from my cover, not the way the tailgate fits, I think that is the issue.

I can't imagine how yours would stay dust free, unless the 2016's have a different fitting tailgate. There is really nothing stopping the dust from coming up from underneath between the bed ,and tailgate.

You are right the tailgate does not seal much at all. I was going to get a tailgate seal but haven't had any issue with dirt/dust and only minimal amounts of water get in. I Think the dust in the bed has a lot to do with the soft tonneau covers as they act like a huge bellows when going down the road. The constant up and down flapping causes the dust to be sucked in and then settles in the bed. Obviously some soft tonneaus would be better than others depending on how much movement there is while driving. With my hard tonneau (Bakflip VP) I have never had an issue with dust in the bed. You could try a tailgate seal they are fairly inexpensive and it may help.

Thanks, that really does make sense. didn't know there was such a thing as a tailgate seal. My soft cover has minimal bellowing, but I can see where that might cause an issue. The largest concentration of dust is right at the bottom of the tailgate inside, and around the fifth wheel prep caps.Of course everything is covered in dust . For now I'll just cover everything with a tarp, with the tonneau cover it will stay put.

Before we hit the mountain roads where we go to hunt, there is about 20 miles of rural dirt roads that we can roll at 50 mph if wanted, they are good roads ,but very dusty. Thats certainly not helping my situation much.

Would some of you share the brand of tonneau cover you have and IF you'd buy that brand again and why...

Thanks for your insight...

I second the Bakflip. They make a great product that has been very durable and keeps everything dry and clean. It's also very easy to install.

I have the latest edition of the backflip with a bed rug liner it keeps the dust out from the tail gate, since the bed rug has a section from bed to tailgate it is all one piece. You can hit the big box home improvement stores weather strip Isle and pick up some weather stipping with tape back to seal the space or make your own with the neoprene foam material and either indoor/outdoor double sided carpet tape ot 3m M double sided auto body tapes.

IMO regardless of what cover you have, something has to be done like you say sealing the tailgate, and also the fifth wheel prep even with the caps on I get dust around them on dusty roads. Cover really doesn't have much to do with how the dust is coming in thru the tailgate.

I have used the tailgate seal on numerous trucks and it works quite well. If you had your cover installed at a shop on your previous truck, I'd venture to guess they probably installed a seal at the same time and you didn't even know it. My local aftermarket dealer here always gives me a tailgate seal when I buy a tonneau cover or a topper. You can purchase one yourself on Amazon for not too much money, very easy to install.

Thanks I'll be getting one for sure.
