transmission troubles

Hi there. Im a little new to the cummins world so youll have to forgive my ignorance. The other day I was driving my 97 1-ton 4x4 5 speed down the Hiway when all of the sudden the 5 gear started making alot of noise. Needless to say my 5 gear is out. all of the other gears work fine. I am the second owner of the vehicle and it has 134,000 miles on it 17,000 of which I put on. I havent done any hauling with it. why do you suppose this has occured.

Second. I assume that the transmission is factory. Can I put a tougher transmission in. should I just change out the 5 gear. or could i convert it to a 6 speed transmission. What are your thoughts. By the way it is a cummins 12 valve.

5th Gear Nut

Your 5th gear has probably popped off the shaft. Fifth gear is located on the back of the transmission. The nut used to hold it on is known for backing itself off of the threads. Once the nut backs off, the gear will eventually pop off. There is an updated nut fix for the 5th gear or you can re-use the old one with Loc-Tite. You will have to pull the transfer case off to fix it.

fcrawford1,

You could also get a fully splined shaft from Standard Transmission. Our output shafts were not fully splined from the factory:( It's definately the weak link in the NV4500. Their # is 1-800-783-8726. I believe the kit is about $450. This is what I'll be doing when mine comes off.

Mine dropped off around 70,000  with some towing. I use to run it hard in 5th while towing ... not any more. Until the fully splined shaft goes in ... 20psi max.

5th gear nut

From what i've been told the reason the 5th gear nut comes loose is from being in 5th gear while towing something and letting the engine rpm get down to 1500rpm and and steping on the loud pedal creates alot of torque and works the 5th gear nut loose and off comes the gear. :--) They have an update kit for the fix in the 5th gear and a new nut.

It does'nt matter what you do 5th is eventually going to come off. I used every nut out there and finally found out about the fully splined shaft. Worth every penny. I tow hard and loaded heavy and it is holding fine. TDR is a great sight. I payed for 2 trannies and lost 5th 8 times before finding about Standard Trans on this site and getting the transmission issues solved. JMHO
