intake heater problem

what to do?
I've reset the max fuel screw (one turn), diaphragm, star wheel, and smoke screw on my 188000 mile '92. Last weekend, the muffler magically became a straight pipe too!
I had the dealer set the pump timing recently.
I'm getting a regular puff of white smoke after startup. It will continue until the engine gets up to temp.
Have I gone the wrong way on the pump adjustments? Oil consumption does not seem to be a problem. All fluids look good.
Power is quite good.
Could this be tied to my intake heater problem? The smoke was present when the outside temp was over 60.
Help?

If you're starting your truck cold, like in the morning, then its normal to get alittle white smoke at start up until it gets up to operating temp. Mine does the same thing... after its been running for a while, it gets hot, and the smoke goes away. If its excessive and thick, then you may have a problem with the intake heaters. I had this prblem last winter. I only had one heater working. Even with the intake heaters cycling, there will still be alittle white smoke, but it goes away after the engine is warm. I had my truck in a heated garage for awhile, and i hadn't ran it for a week or so, and when I started it, it puffed white smoke for awhile. I hope this helps, I don't know a whole lot, as i'm still learning, but I've learned this from first hand experience. Later!

how can I test my heaters? I think one of them has failed.
The temps are falling again and I really don't like the idea of letting it rattle-n-clatter until it gets to temp.
I will flip the key a few times to cycle the heater and it seems to help a bit.
My Chrysler shop manual is in the mail. Will it provide enough info about the Cummins? The folks at Chry-Co said there were no diesel supplements.
Should I go ahead and order the manual from Cummins?

Greetings Feets,
Yeah the Cummins manuals are great but they're STRICTLY engine. "Operation and Maintenance Manual B Series Engines" Bulletin # 3810205-12 and "Shop Manual B Series Engines" Bulletin # 3810206-02.
You might also ask if there are any up-grades to the manuals. Cimmins Customer Service Center's # is 1 800 3437357.
Hope this does you some good.

There are a few posts on the site re: white smoke. It is quite normal on cool/cold starts to have some white smoke. If it excessive I THINK I read that it can mean your pump timing is still slightly off, especially if you've done some fueling mods. (Happy to be corrected if I'm wrong)
Mine does the same thing. In fact I even get a bit of blue if its really cool and I don't plug it in overnight. Even then I need to let it idle a bit to start the warming and reduce the tinge of smoke. A further tip is as soon as it is started (assuming and auto transmission) put it in neutral as you get more fluid being pumped to restore any drainback you've had after sitting. Apparently these things will sort of siphon back some fluid resulting in a bit of soft engagement for the first minute or two if you don't. It helped me. There's also an anti-drainback valve available for them if you wanna pay for it.
FWIW.

I have recently adjusted my pump and changed injectors. When my truck is cold, it smokes like a freight train. Sometimes it is white/black and other times it is black. It cleans up when it comes up to operating temperatures.

feets,
You need to either test your KSB soleniod located on the side of your injection pump or just replace your sensor that is located on your intake manifold. The KSB solenoid looks like a brake light switch and kind of hangs under the pump. Caution this circuit runs on 10 volts DC; i. e. jumpering 12volts to it may not solve anything, except certify that it is fraged #ad
. Off the top of my head I cannot tell you which screw in sensor is for the KSB; there are two, one for the KSB, one for your intake heaters. Here is how you tell, pull the connectors off both sensors and get a 15/16" socket or wrench and unscrew both( remember to clean any dirt from around the threads before... make your motor happy #ad
) The sensor for KSB is the one that has a capacitor looking thing enclosed in a plastic cage. I didn't test anything on my truck but had the same problems, I replaced both sensors and figured it out that way. When this sensor or solenoid (can't rule that out either) fails to work, it does SMOKE WHOA! Hope this helps.

My truck also has some light smoke at warm-up. It is noticably more since I added my injectors. Which way would the pump timing be off? I have heard people adjusting the timing the thickness of a dime one way or the other I have entertained the idea myself. I'm just curious which way to go.

The pump is a real rat to loosen off. If you do manage to get all 3 bolts loose you rotate the pump upward... that is if your looking From the back of the pump forward to radiator you turn it clockwise. That will advance the timing. It doesn't take much to adjust it a fair bit. When mine was done I could barely tell it had been moved, and I mean barely!
Let me say that this is something best done properly, by someone who uses the right equip. First you've no idea were it is now let alone were its going to end up.
Maybe I'm just to chicken to do it but I didn't wanna take the chance.
Good luck if you give it a go though.

The KSB soleniod increases the internal pressure in your pump which advances your timing to reduce white smoke when temps are cool. I am not a Bosch tech so I can't tell you all the perticulars. #ad

What exactly is a KSB solenoid? I know I have one (duh!) and I've looked at it, but I don't know what it does. Help me out! Thanks guys/

I had a serious white smokeout this weekend. Skied with the 4 nephews at Monarch, truck was nice and cold by the end of the day, about 20 degrees ambiant. Started it up no problem, and I failed to notice that the grid heater didn't cycle much.

Off I go, down the pass, idling in 5th gear. Well, downhill for 3000' of elevation, feathering the gas a little on the flatter spots to keep her rolling, does not warm up the truck one bit.

Everytimme I feathered the gas, the truck would blow huge amounts of white smoke, act like it wasn't even firing for a few seconds, then it would catch and fire and the smoke would quit.

The poor folks behind me kept a pretty safe distance! I just about turned around to head up the pass to warm her up!

Egaad, the sierra club satellites probably caught this one...

Does the KSB have a lead coming out of it or something that connects to a wire? Cause if thats the case, mines been unplugged for sometime. Whenever i plugged it in, it made the engine really quiet. I didn't like that so I leave it unplugged. It doesn't seem to hurt anything, and there have never been excesive amounts of white smoke. Just the normal ones in a could morning, which there isn't very much of at all. Just wondering.

YIKES!!!! You ahve been running in the cold advanced mode all the time. If it runs poorly when connected, then you need to alter your timing settings.

It is not good for the pump to run that way. The supply pump is forced to generate way more pressure on a steady basis than it should have.

If the engine sounds really quiet with the KSB solenoid plugged in, does that mean there is somthing wrong with the timing? I'll plug it back in if i'm doing harm, cause I had no idea. I'm glad you told me though, otherwise I may have totally screwed it up. I replaced the lift pump last year when I bought it. Thanks for telling me Wagon! #ad
I should say that with it plugged in, it runs like a charm, just like it does now... only its really quiet and doesn't sound like a Cummins... . #ad
I mean the turbo gets louder than the engine noise, and I have a loud turbo anyway!
