My stupid question of the day.

What a frustrating experience trying to buy a tool box to fit inside the bed of the swb. Whetherguard and Contico both listed boxes as fitting, but after measuring non come close to clearing the wheel well. Anyone got a box inside their swb 3rd gen? Thanks, Doc

I have a weatherguard out of my 01 and it doesn't fit anymore. It was one that sat in the bed and was level with the top bedrail. Probably have to go with one that sits on the bed rails unless a box manufacture comes out with one.

I have a Truck Trunk box, the Ultra series. Very high quality, but one of the more expensive boxes out there. They come in two depths, but fit like a glove. I have rail caps and BedRug, and it fits perfectly. Although I rarely carry big things in the bed, the box takes up a bit of room. Take a peek.

Buy the best the first time around and you will never need to buy another box. Go to www.protech.net or call the Vancouver WA office at 1-800-443-6153. They can and will custom make any size that you want.

My current box is about 12 years old and has had tons of gravel dumped on it, been slept on, deer quartered on it, and traveled over 250,000 miles. Sure it has a few scratches and is not as pretty as it once was. But on occasion I clean it up with some polish and it still looks good.

Doc,

I know you had mentioned in a different thread that you did not want a diamond plate box. However, other than being constructed out of diamond plate my new Highway Products toolbox is just what your looking for. Highway designed this box just for the 3rd gen shortbeds and it fits under my tonneau cover with no trouble.

I was wanting to put on a low-profile over the rail toolbox (diamond plate), I like keeping the bed cleaned out when not in use an the ones that bolt down to the bottom will collect junk after a while more so. Also was planning in the future on getting a fifth wheel trailer with extended pin box an slider hitch. Would this low profile box be a problem even if you have the extended pin box an slider hitch. Any one with this set up.

Here's my setup in a SWB with a Pull-Rite SuperGlide hitch. These are both UWS boxes. The front one is a slim-line (only 12" front-to-rear), and is for a Dakota, so I could suspend it *between* the rails on z-brackets. That way the 5er clears it, and I can even install my topper over it; also, I maintain the full 6'3" load length on the floor (with the rear 5er box removed).

Here's another view of the front box--the gap in front is to provide clearance for the lid to open (you can also see the Firestik antenna mounts that work with the topper as well).

Mark, that is a nice set up you got there. Does the overrail box have to set away from the bed front in order for the lid to open or can it butt up to it an still have the room to open up. Also what is the weight rating of the Z-brackets. :D

Tony,

Since the hinge is at the bottom edge of the lid lip, there has to be enough room behind (or is that in front of?) the box for the full thickness of the lid, including the lip, when it's open.

As for weight ratings, well, I guess I haven't tested them to yield yet ;) They're a home-fabbed component, bolted up out of aluminum angle and bar-stock.

I have the same question. I have the low profile over the rail box and am also wondering can I have a 5'er if I have an extended pin box and slider hitch.

CAUTION

The Mopar box requires the installation of box stiffeners to keep the front of the box from cracking out. I seriously doubt that any of the aftermarket boxes will come with any warning or the brackets. It is also referenced in the owners manual on page 133.

You saying an over the rail will make these cheesy boxes split? What the?????????? Doc
