Well, as I posted Thursday in the 12-valve forum, I lost my 5th gear. I have decided to do the repair myself, but need to know the part numbers and availability if the special tools required for installing the gear and for tightening and torquing the nut. Also any technique for holding the transmission from turning while torquing. I am going to do it with the transmission still in the truck. Thanks for any help!
John
(Nut and gear will be ordered Monday. Already have special oil and service manual coming)

Miller tool has the tool to turn the nut and the tool to hold the shaft. http://www.spxmiller.com/ Look under Chrysler tools.
I think you will need more than a 1/2" torque wrench. The nut gets torqued to 300+ ft. lbs.

I purchased the 5th gear nut assembly from the local Dodge dealer some time ago. No problem... it was in stock. Then I ordered the two tools that are needed to do the job from Miller Tools and it took 6 weeks for them to arrive. Like you, I want to do the fix... but just haven't gotten around to doing it. If you'll pay the postage and pass on any tips that might be of help... I'll send you the tools for you to use so you can do the job as soon as you want. Just promise me you'll send them back when you're done.

I'm inspired to do this because another TDR member(Alaska Bee) made a 4-1/2" hole saw availabe to TDR members to assist in installing the Psychotty Air System. His kindness really left an impression on me.

EZ, Dieselnut

EZ has a 2wd, and DN has a 4x4. I believe the one tool required is different for the 2.
I want to get the tools and do it some time also, as PM.

Paul:

Are you sure? This means the construction of an NV4500 going into a 2wd is different from the construction of an NV4500 going into a 4wd... sounds odd. I don't recall Miller Tools asking me to specify whether the tool was for a 2 or 4 wheel drive (although it's been some time since I placed my order).

You could be right and I've often been wrong. Just my $. 00002 worth.

They list them as different part numbers on their web-catalog. I also think that there has been other discussions about them being different. My6eats8s blew his transmission and could only find a 2wd transmission at the time, did not fit.

The tools are different. It is actually MORE expensive for the 2-wheel drive shaft holding tool. I bought three tools. One to install the nut, one to hold the shaft and one to torque the nut with. A local friend has a 3/4" drive torque wrench he is gonna let me borrow.
I ordered the tools second-day-air form the Miller website. It said they were all in stock. Total of $105 with the express shipping. #ad

EZ94, thanks for the offer anyway. I am glad to see that there are kind folks in the world like you and many of the TDR members. Joining this membership has been one of the most enjoyable and worthwhile things I have ever done. Thanks again for all the help. I'll let yall know how it all goes. #ad
