Well the rear brakes on the old Dodge gave out this weekend. I am upgrading to 1 ton brakes and 1 1/8" wheel cylinders. My question is, what type of specialty tools do I need to perform a rear brake job? The drums have been off recently (by a local brake shop to check the condition of the brake pads). Also what size of socket do I need to get to take the big nut off the axle? The reason I am asking is I am doing this at my farm and don't want to tie up the local ag repair shop while I am getting the drums turned.

Brakes are not that hard to take care of on our trucks, I would say to make sure you have a brake spoon, spring pliers for the hold-downs and shoe retainers (I actually made a tool for this with an old screwdriver and an air saw #ad
), anti-seize, and the 2-9/16" axle retainer nut wrench should take care of it.

A side note: My Dad bought a pressure/vacuum bleeder kit that comes with a check-valve on a bleeder catch can that allows you to pump fluid through until you run out without continually opening and shutting the bleeder #ad
nice tool.

Just one other note, some oil will drain out when you pull the axle, don't forget to top up the rear end. I would also recommend that when the job is finished, jack up the back end, first one side then the other. That way you will be sure to get immediate lubrication to each of the rear axle bearings,

The 2 9/16" socket is a special socket with the round corners. There is also a tang that keeps the nut from backing out that needs to be removed before you remove the nut.
