My truck won't go any faster than 90 mph on top end. Is the engine rev-limited to that speed, or is there something else that keeps it there? The engine runs right up there and won't go any faster... but doesn't start cutting out or anything.

I don't drive it that way except this one time just to see what it would do, so it's not that big a deal. Just curious.

'99 QC 6 spd SB 4x4 with new VA box, straight pipe exhaust, stock otherwise.
 
I think the Governor is at 3200, if you have the 4:10 gears that is probably all you're gonna get. With the 3:55 they will go over 100,(I have heard).

I am running the 3. 54 ratio. It did stop at around 3200 rpm's on the tach. I really drive conservatively anyway; don't need to run over 70 mph. It goes fast enough to get me a ticket!
 
Don't soumd right unless the 6 speed OD is a lot diferent ratio than the auto. You should be turning about 2800 rpm at 90 mph. Mine is just under 2000 at 70 mph. Maybe your speedometer or tach is not reading right? bg

My 2001 Auto with a 3. 54 has been up to 115 mph and was not close to redline... I just chickend out.....

My truck was clocked at 124 at 3am on a deserted stretch of road by my friend in his police car. I havent made my mind up yet if I liked the experiance or not in that big of a vehicle. I had a 99 C5 Corvette that I "bombed" and had clocked. It registered 147. It got traded shortly after that. They invented governors for guys like me I think.

So I wonder why my truck won't go any faster than 90 mph? It is running really well right now. I have a new VA box and a K & N air filter in it but otherwise stock (for now).

Any thoughts as to why speed would be limited on the top end? The truck gets after it while accelerating, so I don't think there is anything wrong with it. I plan on changing to 275 hp Bosch injectors and adding propane fumigation to the intake pre-turbo.
 
If your engine is turning 3200rpm in overdrive at 90 mph your clutch is slipping big time or your speedo and or tach is way off. #ad

You have omitted one real important piece of info in this thread.
What rearend ratio do you have????????????

I have the HO 24 valve 6 speed with the 3:54 ratio and I had to quit at 115 because it was starting to scare me, I never hit the rev limiter.

my 3500 ETH/DEE with 4. 10's hit 100mph before I backed off (about 3200+rpm). I dont usually drive it like this, but it is very important (IMHO) to know exactly how fast you CAN go. You shoulda heard the turbo whistle inside that tunnel..... sweeeeet!

Seriously, you should be able to top 115 with 3. 54 gears. Does your truck have an automatic or 5-speed? This is a stupid question, and don't take this wrong, but it WAS in overdrive right? If you were redlined at 3200 rpm, you couldn't have been in OD.
 
I have a HO Cummins/6-speed/3. 54 gears and my truck will do 115 MPH as well.

I have a 2001 auto w/ 4. 10 an it will do 102 mph.

One thing to keep in mind about top speed is that the speedos in general tend to be a bit "optimistic" at higher speeds. My Garmin GPS recorded a top speed of 105 when the speedo registered 112.

Ran 118 for 8 to 10 miles on I-8 (Middle of nowhere AZ) Buddy of mine in his 00 PSD stop chuggin around 94. Hehehe (Gotta love that, he started it, I finished it!).

Was at the red line, seemed like it would go more, but I was governing myself at that point. Didn't try the cruise, heard it doesn't work above 85. (Not that you need it up at 100, anyway)

BTW: This was prebombed. Not expecting it go higher, just get there faster.
