I have a 1996, 2500, 2wd. Have not been dynoed yet but have had a lot of work done to the truck, estimate 280 horse, 550 - 600 torque. My question is without tampering with the govenor is there a way to increase top speed ( I have a five speed ). We have tampered with the linkage for more throttle. My truck seems like it will do 92 in the quarter mile, 92 towing and 92mph top speed, in fact thats all it will do even down hill with a tail wind. Thanks for any information.

Dale,

Your best bet is to change the governer springs. Piers from BD performance has a spring kit designed to increase usable RPM to about 3400.

Many members have installed it and love it.

I am planning to do mine this spring. #ad

Search the arcives for "Governer spring kit"
lots of info.

If you're pulling 3000rpm in 5th, thats all there is, big tires or not... gotta do the spring kit!

I have a 98. Going downhill, with a tail wind etc. etc. (all the little things that help... except it was snowing out #ad
) I got it to about 99.
My truck revs to 3000 on the tach. It's stock.

dale:

I have a 96' just like you except mine
is a 4X4. Like "HEMI" said, "change the
governor springs out. " Prior to doing this
on my truck, my top RPM was about 2400.
My top end at that time was about 103 MPH.

I then had Scheid Diesel install the 370's,
the governor and AFC spring kits along
with a "recalibration" of the P7100 pump.
The top end is now "above 115 MPH" and the
truck will rev up to 3400 RPM!

Some of the other "12 valve" members
have reported top speeds higher than
that!

Like you, I "would like a little more
myself. " I have now reached the point
where I need to go to the HX-40/16.
I believe my HX-35 is about "maxed out"
now and I need more air!!

I've always wanted to ask this regarding the spring kit. What danger is there in the fact that you're talking about reving past the red line? It's my understanding the red line on our 12valvers is there more for the sake of the injecter pump than the engine. Is one begging to disintegrate the pump reving past the red line or not? Just wondering.

My truck is like yours except stock(almost) and it will do 98-100mph at 2800rpm, it has 3. 54 gears. What is your rear end ratio?
I spent lots of fun weekends around the Randsburg area and miss it a lot.

Must the valve springs be done to take full advantage of the Gov spring kit??
How long does it take to install this kit, and how much $$$ is it??

Up to around 3200 rpm the stock springs are OK. Over that, the 60 psi springs help prevent valve float. The whole enchilada will run you around $340 for the best quality springs.
