Hey Guy's I am going to be starting a new truck build but I am looking for advise on what torque converter to use . this will be a Crewcab longbed dually 4x4 will have a 518 trans and 205 transfer case is going to be used mainly for towing a travel trailer .I want to have this thing built right and already have trans rebuild handled now I just need advise on what torque converter to use .? what have you guy's used and why ?I don't want to have to rebuild it or take it out after it's installed .
build will be starting here soon so stay tuned . Oct first is my Start Date or real close to it .

Granted, all my rigs have 3 pedals on the floor, I believe you are going to want something a bit tighter then stock to get rid of unwanted slippage therefore reducing heat generated by the converter, trans. Off topic, give me a shout later today when you have a free minute, need to check inventory ! :-laf

Id get ahold of I think its call truck resources in Clackamas , Oregon they seam like there convertors are top notch or id use the complete BD set up

Best advice is find a local builder with a good reputation and talk to him about your wants/needs. Having a good relationship with a competent trans builder within driving distance is worth its weight in gold. I am not a big fan of buying built trannies or even parts via the inter web because you have zero local support when any issues arise. Even if you do choose to buy something online it would be wise to buy with the consent of your builder, if he is familiar with what your buying and endorses it you will be further ahead in the game. My local guru custom builds his own convertors. I have ridden in trucks with some high dollar big name TC's and Dean's convertors are very comparitive.

Trans will be Built by a Good Friend of Mine that Know's transmission's very well .he is building it too my spec's but we both desided to put this out there to findout what everyone think's On Converter's I have a TCS converter in My truck and even being a used unit when I bought it I'm very Impressed with it so far and so is everyone that has ridden in my truck.

and Mark I will give you a Call tomorrow .

I have a low stall high TQ mult TC built by the ITW guys. It is hard on the 518 clutch but it sure puts the power down on the ground. Highly advise upgrades in the forward and direct clutch pack or you will be pulling it apart. I have another one that is not as tight and it works quite well also, low enough stall to get thing smoving nd enouhg chnage sto make the TQ work better. All depends on how you tune the engine and how much power you want on the ground.

I am going for reliability and enough power to pull what it's Pulling at the time . I am looking at all the Option's I can get and then go from there .

Any specific reason to not consider a 47RH upgrade? A billet cover TC is really one of the biggest benefits with a TQ engine in front of it. With a lockup TC the TC can be loosened up somewhat for spool and keeping the exhaust clean yet alow the power on the ground when needed.

Definitely need an upgraded flex plate if you want to tow and put down and decent power. Tends to want to rip the guts out of the flex plate because it doesn't have very good support with just the lugs. With a non lockup TC it is fine line between getting it tight enough to handle the TQ and too tight it wants to smoke at the slightest load.

Well found out tonight the guy has talked to his Better Half and desided to go with a 3rd pedal NV4500 trans so this will be interesting .it's going to be a Ground up build with a manual trans .going to be FUN . Stay Tuned .
