Recently my torque converter was cycling in and out, both with overdrive on and off. This transmission shop said that after checking around he heard that the alternator wires could be causing interference. His solution was to wrap a ground wire around the three wires coming off of the alternator. So far it seems to be working. Anybody heard of this before?

TCC cycling and alternator

Have seen this on several occasions. You might want to have the electricla system checked for AC voltage at the battery indicating a problem in the alternator. If AC voltage is present it could effect or damage other electronic components. Alternators change AC to DC for vehicle operation and battery charging, any AC volts in the system indicates leakage in the alternator. HTH

there is a TSB for this ...

18-02-99 (i think) , but if what you did is working , and you've never been reflashed and your truck is getting good mileage then i would NOT take it in for the reflash ...

I've been helping another TDR member attempt to correct the TCC in/out thing that happens intermittantly on a 99 2500. TSB 18-02-99 has been done to the truck, along with APPS and JTEC being replaced. I did ride in the truck once (with it acting up) with the DRB hooked up and was able to watch the TCC commanded toggling form lock/unlock/lock/ect at the same time APPS voltage was very unstable. I figure if the slow scan tool picked it up it obviously was having problems.

A different day I checked with a DSO (other techs have scoped it also);

APPS 5V ref

APPS signal V

APPS ground

APPS V being sent from the Cummins ECM to JTEC

JTEC ground

Also disabled the alt to elimate possible noise

But the truck wasn't acting up that day. The only reading that was different than my 2001 was the JTEC ground on his was dirty (even though there was more noise on his, it still worked properly that day).

Has anyone actually fixed this successfully? It seems to be mentioned every so often but I haven't heard of a fix.

Any suggestions would be appreciated,

Thanks

Wayne

My buddy just asked me about this his is doing the same thing, but a 96? And he says will do it for a day or two and then go away for a few weeks and do it again? Any Idea's?

The flash has been done, as has a new JTEC, Cummins ECM, APPS and complete underhood harness. At one point it didn't act up for a few monthes. This truck has been a problem for a year and a half, been worked on by multiple dealerships. I've messed around with it twice (it's 250 miles away). But being a wonderful intermittant problem makes it hard to diagnose for anyone.

There is definately noise on the APPS signal wire that appears to be coming from the APPS ground, my 01 w/ 6 speed has the same noise, so the noise in not unique to his truck and the noise is there when the truck runs great. For me it's only acted up once, had the DRB on the truck , and there is limited info with it. When I've had the DSO on the truck it wouldn't act up (go figure).

I said the problem seemed to be solved with the ground wire... . well traveling to the coast this weekend it started doing it again. (Oh, by the way, my cycling is also intermittant) I pulled over, shut the truck off, opened the hood and ran my hands over the alternator and wires. Started it up and it hasnt done it for since then, about 250 miles. Touching it probably isnt doing anything, just a coincidence, but it seems to work. I guess I will have to get the reflash done. The dealer told me he would do it for free but he said once you reflash it you cant go back and it may make problems worse..... hum... . I lost a bit of confidence in them when I heard that.

Bassman,

I had mine flashed for high/3 cyl idle and have had no problems afterwards. But I guess there is a remote chance that something could be affected, but not mine. DC never really told us what all was being changed on a flash.

Sounds like you have the same condition going on, please post back progress with your repair. Hopefully a simple PCM flash will fix it.

Thanks,

Wayne
