There is a great article in the members area that goes in to great detail on how to add a Torque convertor lock up switch. It is in the feature article section and it is titled adding a torque converter mystery switch. Good Luck

Here's a place to consider for switch location, this is on a 97 also..... DDG

The truck in the feature article section must be a different year because the connectors on my buddys truck are different. Thats why i need to know which wires to splice into. By the way that was a good place for the switch. He wants to be able to lock, unlock, and also have the transmission lock the converter.

That is a great place for your switch. If I read this thing correctly this switch makes it so that your trans will not upshift correct? So basically you would only use this for using your engine to slow you down going down a hill correct so you wouldnt even use it nor would it help you on acceleration am I correct in my understanding?

I installed my switch the same way as shown on the TST site, which is different from the one shown in the TDR feature article. The TST method is to just ground the wire from the pin 54, while the TDR article says to put an inline switch on that wire. My setup seems to work fine, are both ways correct?

The switch can be put in two ways. I use the three position switch. In the center it's "off". Lock up will not occur or if it's being driven in the "stock" mode, & it's locked up, center will unlock the TC. I usually start off in "off" and move it to what I call "manual lockup" (forward) when I feel it's time for lock up. In this position, it stays locked even when you tap the brake or let your foot off the accelerator, and stays locked until you move back to the "off" position. There is some confusion about what's happening when you feel your truck "shift". Some think what they feel when the TC locks is OD. The trucks shifts 1st,2nd,Drive,OD, THEN it locks up. Lockup is the last big RPM drop you feel, not OD. If you have OD turned off, then Lockup happens in "D" or 3rd. With the TC manually locked, you get engine braking when going down hill or coasting to a stop, rather than freewheeling when you take your foot off the pedal ... ... . DDG

Dennis, thanks for your explanation on the 3 position switch. Can you please explain to me what is going on in 1st and 2nd. All I have read says to turn the mystery switch off in 1 and 2. I have also tried moving the shift lever to 2 then 1 to see if there is any braking, and there doesn't appear to be any, yet if you start in 1, hold it in 1, then take your foot off the fuel, there is braking. I would sure like to hear the "rest of the story"!! ps, I don't have a switch yet.

As I understand and have experienced it, the "mystery switch" only works with the shifter in the "D" position. With your shifter in "D" and in "O. D. ", your truck, from a standing start will start in first(slip),second(slip),third(lock),fourth(lock). With the mystery switch off and the other variables the same your shifting will be as follows: first(slip), second(slip), third(slip), third(lock), fourth(slip), fourth(lock).

TST Power Products also gives some good insight into the +'s and -'s of the mystery switch, plus gives you very detailed instructions for the '97.

Good Luck
