Starting a new thread (was previously need trans advise) to see if I can get some different ideas. I am installing a new torque converter in a 98 12v 47re and running into a problem. It seems the converter will not drop far enough into the transmission. I have the converter dropped in as far as it will go and it is sticking out 5/8ths of an inch past the bellhousing. If I install the transmission everything mates up fine between the bellhousing and engine and the converter spins freely. If I tighten the trans to engine bolts it locks up the converter and I can no longer spin it. I have attempted this three times now so I need some advice before I try again, I'm getting tired of putting this thing in and taking it back out.

I don't understand your question. To my understanding it is in all the way. I've spun and spun, spun and rocked, spun back and fourth for god knows how long and it will not go in any further.

I'm convinced it's the wrong convertor , since it does not fit into the tyranny . the torque convertor is cut out on the tyranny side to fit the transmission drive . if it won't do this it is not the right one or you have damaged the torque convertor or the drive on the transmission.

I agree with you, if by transimission drive you mean the two slots on the coverter fiting over the two tabs for the trans pump it is doing that. It just seems to be about 1/4" to long on the shaft.

On most automatics the flex plate is recessed into the mounting flange. Put a straight edge across the flange and measure how deep it is then measure how far the T. C. protrudes from the transmission. This should tell you if you will damage any thing.

Just wanted to update that I found the problem. There was a burr on the flexplate that was binding the converter. A little emery cloth and all is good.
