I know that sooner or later my stock transmission is going to take a dump. If I turn my TST to 4/4 and the Bully Dog on HI it starts slipping. I have a ATS TripleLok sitting in the rear seat of my truck and I've been debating on putting it on now or wait for the hole stage V from ATS. My question is if I put the TripleLok in now and my transmission takes a dump could it possibly hurt the converter? I don't know much about trannies so any advice would help. Thanks!

When the transmission died on my '03 QC they not only replaced the trans and convertor but also the radiator and external transmission cooler because of all the "debris" from the failed transmission. I would wait, then also budget in a new ext cooler and radiator :( Or, replace it before it dies and save the $1000 in parts for the rad and cooler, that would be the smart way to go. See, you will SAVE money by spending money :-laf ... . just in case you need to justify this to the wife ;)

Thanks BHolm. Its sure nice learning from other peoples mistakes. TDR is awesome! Now if I can keep my foot out of it til I can afford a stage V not only will I save my new convertor by not installing it but also I'll save my radiator and transmission cooler too. Thats a lot of saved money! If I had a wife she would like that.

OK, I'm waiting for some expert to respond to this one too. To a shade tree mechanic like me, it seems like the TC is getting fluid that was just filtered, so if something starts making metal, the fancy new converter is safe. I am sooooo close to ordering a triple lock and valve body before I head out with the new #10 plate and 5er this Spring. .

Good luck,

DM.

That depends John. When my 96 broke the shaft it looked like it was cut in half. No crap in it at all. We just put the new shaft and hub in and checked everything out and back together!no problems! When we would race it we would lock the converter about 25 feet out and go through the gears locked after the billet shaft install.

I would say that you were lucky IMO, I've had 3 trans in here with broken input shafts and the transmission's were destroyed. I'm not saying that a person might be lucky but after seeing some of the carnage I wouldnt chance it.

I've been debating on how far i want to go with the transmission also and have talked to several shops and ATS and DTT themselves and noone's answers are the same. Some say the input shaft can bind up and tear up the converter and some say it will either break or strip the threads and just spin inside the torque converter. DTT frowns on anything but redoing the whole transmission. I think i am going to order a billet input shaft VB kit and torque converter and when they install those see how everything else is holding up.

IMO, it is as simple as being willing to pay to take it out and redoing it.

A trans rebuilt by a DTT trained guy ( or gal ? ) will have the failure common issues addressed.

Why not do it once and right.

I like to rebuild them but HATE to take them out of the truck.

BTW, I'm not certified by any trans shop.

I have bow tie and blue oval guys around me and if this truck comes home on a hook, they will never stop the talk.

You may get away with it WHO knows?

I'm not saying go cheap but once the pan and everything is open a trained transmission guy should be able to see any problems starting to develop and replace whatever is necessary. I've also been told the transmission shops use different oils from one said 0-30w syn. to no synthetic cause it's too slick and the clutch paks can't operate like they should.
