Just bought a 98 RAM 2500(65,000mi) and am working through a few quirks and puzzles.

There is a clatter, tapping noise that comes from the torque converter only in park. If you put it in neutral, "D"or "R" the noise stops. Temps are below freezing. I know(I think I know )the trans fluid doesn"t circulate to the cooler in park. Is there a valve or check valve that could be clattering?

Any advice appreciated.

OK, I am cheating a little, my diesel is a first gen, but this is a gas 360, (but I wish it was a diesel. ) and the info here is hard to beat.

Thanks any info.

When my 93 started dooing that i was towing a 33ft 5th wheel. After about 50 miles the flexplate let go and everything was torn up.

It happened in the only spot between Tillamook and Asia Or. that cell phones didn't work.

Thanks to all for the advice.

When I got under the problem was that the inspection plate for the torque converter was bent in and was being hit by a bolt on the converter. Everything else seems normal. Fixed plate and noise is gone.

Rclark, had a similar experience in New Mexico with a chevy powered Motorhome. Did have a great repair experience in Tucumcarie (I can't spell) NM. High Country Ford( I know, a chevy in a Ford shop? But they did good work), I was towed in they got right under it and next morning I was on my way at a fair price. Also nice town to visit.

Thanks.
