I have posted on this in the past and I thought I had the problem solved. My t/c is going through that unlock/ lock problem again. I purchased a smart box and recaled my tps in the spring and I have not had a problem until 2 weeks ago. Being this busy time of year I didn't have a chance to look at it until last week. I checked my wiring and all that loos good. (I soldered it on install) I recaled the tps and drove it. It was ok for 2 days now it is back. Today I checked the tps with a multimeter, 5 volts in BUT only . 356 out at idle (book says 1 volt +-. 2) 3. 67 at WOT (book 2. 29-2. 35 over voltage at idle). Looks like I am way out of spec. I diag the tps as failed. Any second opinions or other things I should check????

something else to keep in mind is that the pcm monitors the brake switch and if it's bad or out of adjustment the pcm might see it coming on and it will unlock the converter thinking the brakes are being applied. You might be right on with your diagnosis though. The brake switch is cheap enough to relace anyways but the apps is quite expensive.

question

My 98. 5 24v is similar since it is my 1st diesel it feels strange to me. when i let off the throttle say going downhill it unlocks (stays in 4th) and has to relock when i get back into it. maby normal. it also seems to shift very soft and at a low rpm unless hard on it. any thoughts?

Thats normal if trans is stock. line pressures drop down to smooth shift under partical load. If you are in full fuel shift firm up, this keeps power up and lessens slip. You can firm it up by adding a shift kit or adding a box.

Ken, that's normal for the converter to unlock when letting off the throttle.

Jpike, if that's the case I'd go with an apps.
