TC again! Enough discussion of modified stators. Questions about stock torque converters.

Did DC change the TC design/parts number when they upgraded the engine from 180 HP to 235 HP?

Also, what diameter TC does the Allison transmission use? I recall reading that the Dodge and Allison were the same diameter. What stator does the Allison use or is it the about the same and rated at about 500 ftlbs? What does the Allison use on the ISC engines? Can an Allison TC be modified to be used on the Dodge transmission?

I can't answer the torque converter question, but I can say that the Allison that GM uses is NOT the answer for us. Apparently, some people have built some power boxes for the Duramax, only to find out that in some cases, a mere 20 to 30 HP results in the transmission slipping and the computer then shuts it down. It appears to vary from vehicle to vehicle, but anywhere from 30 to 80 HP more is the max you can do without finding some way of beefing up the transmission.

Seeing as how you're twisting some 600+ ft-lbs, you've already exceeded the abilities of the Allison.

From hearing a couple trucks run, the torque convertor is pretty "loose", in that the engine will rev quite a bit before it "flashes" and starts delivering power to the ground in large quantities.

BTW, have you been through the area over here? I could have sworn I met you on the highway between pendleton and MF a couple months ago... trailer in tow... :)

Unless you have something against Bill K, I'd just run up to BC and have him put in one of his TC's. I'm extremely happy with mine. The truck is now how it should have been from the factory.

I'm glad I waited for his product vs. BD, ProTorque, Suncoast, etc.

Powerwagon is right about the Allison in the Chevys. It is NOT the same transmission that's been used in buses and dumptrucks etc. It is a new disign of transmission designed specifically for the Chevy pickup application. Fivehundred and something foot pounds of torque for a maximum rating?! LOL! I was shoving around 700 ft pounds through my STOCK 47rh and that's pulling a 33' travel trailer. Did I have to watch how I drove it? Sure, but at 100k miles, the innards were still in good shape when we went in with the DTT stuff. I say, forget the Allison business, spend the extra bucks to upgrade your torqueflite (you'll still have spent less than a chevy guy did for the Allison option) and in my opinion, at least as far as compared to this particualar model of Allison, you'll have a better transmission.

Oh, did I mention that word has it that the Allison in the Chevy's is running about a 20% failure rate right now?

ditto that! :D

sadly, I can't say that such was the case with me... I went the BD route before I upgraded to DTT. :(

..... oh well, learning curve (builds character) :)

Hey Fireman56

It's called "driving is believing"

If I can help a fellow TDR do it right the first time, then I will :)

Or I know of a place to find alot of used other brand TC's

Allison has more transmission models than Carter's got pills. (I'm really not old enough to use that expression!)

We use B400 Allisions on the back (or front) side of the ISCs, both diesel & CNG flavored. I say back or front as it depends on your perspective. The back of the engine where the trany mounts is towards the front of the bus, (T-drive).

The B400 is a very compact trany body and has a build in deccelerator or retarder. It is rated for up to 1700ft-lbs of retard capacity. I checked once on the TC we use and it is a standard low RPM stall HD truck unit.

Now, switching to the LD market and Dodge CTD with a 47RE and Chevy Mini-<small>Max</font> with an Allison. They could use the same TC in theory. The Allsion logic on the B400 series is really set around a TC that grabs in the 2000 rpm range and shifts to hold the engine in the sweet spot until you get off the &quot;go&quot; pedal. I imagine they use a similar profile in the Chevy application due to the extra wide spread between max torque and max HP.

My first BOMB will be a trany upgrade and hopefully a DTT brand. Then the guages & TST package...
