Archived Torque Convertor Slipping

Normally when accelerating my automatic trans. shifts into overdrive at 50mph and locks in as I accelerate to 60 mph. Periodically when accelerating to 50mph my transmission starts to lock in and then it slips back into a lower gear (higher rpms) and takes a couple of tries to get fully locked in. Is it time for me to budget for a new trans, or can I just get a new torque convertor, any wisdom gentlemen? Gabe

I would check the TPS first. My 95 is bad about doing that if I don't clean the TPS about every oil change. By the way I have 221K on the stock OE transmission with a six plate the last 110K.

O drive is controlled by electrical sgnals. So is Lock-up converter. There is noise ( electrical ) in the system that can cause eratic shifts. You have been given good advice with the TPS. Do a search on it and clean it FIRST. Your truck may still need an electrical filter.

Is TPS an acronym for torque position sensor? I will look and clean all electrical when I drop my oil pan. Thanks guys for the quick response!

If cleaning the TPS (throttle position sensor) doesn't fix it, you might want to check the adjustment on the throttle valve cable. The cable can stretch a little, dropping the line pressure a bit. When it happened on mine, the converter would unlock with no rhyme or reason. Pulling the cable out a little cured it.

Do a search on the 12V engine and trans forum for TPS cleaning and find a ton of reading on the subject.
