My 1997 3500 Cummins diesel automatic torque converter does not release when you stop or shift into reverse or drive. it is just like shifting without a clutch. it does not do this all time just about 50% of the time. It doen't matter if it is hot or cold. I have tried cutting the orange and black wire at the transmission with no change. I have also removed the transmission relay with no change. I have also removed the valve body and cleaned it witho no change. I am in africa and cannot go to the nearest garage. can anyone give me any more ideas to look for. I need help.

Thanks for your help,

Terry Riddick

thanks for the repy.

I have checked all these items in the thread Is My transmission Toasted?

My problem seems to be worse if I let the truck idle in park. After take off transmission shifts fine both upshifts and downshifts. I reconnected orange and black wire and torque converter locks and unlocks normally in overdrive but when i get ready to stop it will just choke the engine down unless I shift to neutral. If I am correct the lock-up is not even supposed to occur if the solenoid is grounded in 1st or reverse. Could this be a torque converter bearing proble. The problem started while I was pulling a 12000 pound trailer in the mountains. after crossing the mountain when iI got ready to stop it would not release.

thanks,

Terry
