Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Torquing head studs

So we are in the process of putting my brothers engine back together. We has the head trued up and used a wire wheel to clean up the block mating surface. We then used compressed air to blow out the head stud holes. Finaly we used brake clean to get any grease off of the block and head surfaces. While we were torquing the studs down I noticed some oil coming from between head and block. Is this normal? Should we pull it back off to see where the oil is coming from? Do we need to get another head gasket? Thanks in advance for the help.
