Total Engine hours question

I just hooked up my Quick Check II last night and among many things that it displayed, it showed total engine hours. It said mine was 2663. 6 hours. This seemed high to me. I have 76,000mi on my '99. I just bought the truck a few months ago.

Does anyone know how many HOURS these engines will go before overhaul? I know 400,000+ miles are not uncommon with the Cummins, but how about total hours?



By the way, the Quick Check II rocks! I just need a longer cord to mount it in the cab!

When I bought my truck I put a hour meter on it. It now has 8,876 miles on it and 278 hrs. Hope this will help.

SCooke, that hour number is reasonable. It shows your truck has averaged 28. 53mph over the course of its life. Just divide miles by hours. Murle has averaged 31. 93mph so it looks like he drives a wee bit faster



On the GM diesel site they were discussing the same thing, they had MPH averages between 28 and 50mph based on hours vs mileage.



I can't wait to get myself a Palm and Quickcheck to see what my hours are. I drive alot around town.



At SCooke's pace, 400,000 miles would require 14,020 hours of engine time. That's a ton of hours.

Does this mean that at my pace, I probably will NOT see 400,000 miles on my engine since 14,000 hours would be too many for the motor? That's very depressing!

400,000 miles is for guys making a living on the road - not going to the grocery store, the ballgame, etc. I don't think 8-10,000 hours is an unreasonable expectation. For those engines running 750,000 - 1 million miles without overhaul, you would have a lot more hours than that. Ray

My truck has 37,000 miles with 1100 hours. Hope this helps.

I keep track of my engine hours by the trip computer. The clock ticks when you turn the ignition on but I figure the couple of seconds before I crank won't add up too much. I reset the computer at each oil change ( it resets at 100 hours automatically). I avg 155 to 165 hours every 7500 miles. I hope this is an ok way to keep track of engine hours.

I have been doing mine the same way, but reset at each fuel up. Works OK, but I WANT a Quick Check II or Road Relay. So many wants, so little money. My average is around 30 MPH too, last I calc'd it.

There are many variables to the "how many hours to overhaul" question. In heavy, dirty use in industrial or agricultural applications I would hope for 6 to 8,000 hours. There would be cases where well maintained engines would run several thousand hours more. In marine application, generally much cleaner air and more constant rpms 20,000 hours + is possible. I talked with a captian of a ferry running 4 5. 9s and they figured around 20,000+ hours to overhaul. Your truck should easily see 8,000 hours if it runs longer trips, is well maintained and is near stock power. Yes more power means less engine life. . Personally I would not worry about it. It is very unlikley that you will ever have to overhaul your Cummins. If you put on 50 to 75,000 miles a your towing then plan on tradeing or overhauling at 300 to 600,000 miles. Try that with the big V8s!!
