My dad has a 98 1 ton QC 4x4 dozen valver. We weighed it today on a scale and it came in at just over 11,000 lbs with him in it and an empty tank of fuel. He drives with this much weight all of the time, then on top of that pulls a bobcat or other work trailer. He's a carpenter and has all of the tools, nails, etc in the truck. My question is what do you guys with slide ins weigh in at and what do you get for mileage? He always gets 11 to 13, usually between 12 and 13. It doesn't matter if he's pulling a trailer or not. Oh, he has a banks Git kit on it... Basically a TST Cam plate kit, but more $$, wish I'd become a member sooner. Anywany I just wanted some #'s for comparison.

Thanks

Corey

FYI... He had a V-10 before the diesel (same truck just a v10)... it got between 5 and 6 mpg with the same weight in it... . Lots of power, but what a gas hog.

My 95 12v was a 2WD 3500 dually 5sp 4:10 reg cab. It was not a work truck but it did work a lot towing my RVs. First a 32ft TT then a 35 triple slide fiver. Because it was not a work truck I only had it loaded daily at 6200lbs. At this weight it allways gave me 17-19mpg. Towing the TT at 14K GCWR it gave me 11-13. Towing the fiver at 20,600lbs it gave me 10-11. That's overloaded by 2600lbs. I needed a gear splitter REAL BAD. So I went I bought the best I could find. I found a 6sp close ratio transmission and it came with a free truck!!! That gear splitter only cost 36K !!!!! :D

Does he have a slide in or some such, Does he just dump every thing in the be and hope it doesn't fall out????

Frontal area has more to do with mileage than weight.

8 to 9 w/ 5th, 11 to 12 with 5th and wing, 12 to 13 with fb and car. 5th weighs about 4k more than car and fb.

Shooter is right. To a diesel, weight isnt a large factor. Wind resistance from frontal area is everything! Torque will break inertia and accellerate the mass, then once you hit the cruise control, horsepower maintains the speed (over simplified). Had an old racing buddy who was a mechanical engineer (RIP, John), who gave me the best quote: Horsepower sells motors; torque wins races.

He has a metal topper, that alone weighs 800 lbs. Then on top of that there's a rack for ladders and planks that extends over the cab. There's always ladders up there, sometimes piled 3 high. A lot of wind resistance. I know that makes a big difference, that's why I asked about a slide in, some are pretty tall. Then there's 5 drawers inside, 3 for drills, air nailers, staplers, hand tools, etc. and 2 for nails and screws. Yup, everyone talks about horsepower. But horsepower is always occours at high rpm, you need the torque to get to that high rpm, if you don't have it you'll still be accelerating as the other guy is wound out going across the finish line. I'd rather have the torque and do a wheelie. :D:D

I just came back from a 550 mile trip pulling a 24' and with an empty box.

Did one almost the same mileage 3 weeks ago with a 1,500lb metal bin in the truck box! (wanted to see what it would be like with a loaded truck)

Both trips came out exactly the same for mileage.

Weight didn't matter on these trips, but i'll tell, you it took a little longer to get up to speed with that 1,500# box back there.

Towing my 15,000 fiver I average about 12. 5 mpg at 65 mph. With the 11. 5 pickup camper on I weigh 12,960 lbs and get 13. 3 mpg. at the same speed.

My truck with a Leer shell and some 4X recovery items and spare tools weighs in at 7432 lbs.

I jut went to reno and back and going over there, I got 17. 2 at 75-80 mph

on the way back I eased it to see what I can get out of it and I got 19. 2 running about 67-72

If I was going 65 steady, I might have gotten 20mpg

I have 265/75 16 AT tires

Hope this helps
