I found myself on the VW page for some reason and priced out a Touareg2 twin turbo TDI. Nearly $72,000. Nice vehicle and 310 hp, 553 ft/pds of torque in that little thing would be a hoot, but come on. I guess the ony way they can claim they where the fasted diesel at the Baja 500 was because KORE ran the HEMI. :D

Yeah, that is pretty horrid. That and the fact they only get about 22 mpg highway!!! My old 2001 almost matches that and it probably weighed about 2000 pounds more.

Is the Tuoareg the only diesel car they're selling right now? I got on vw.com and couldn't build a diesel jetta, or even find anything about.

The Jetta won't be back until 2008 I think as a 2009 model from what I'm hearing. They built extra 2006s to sell into 2007, but avoid the 2007 emissions requirements.

It is an expensive rig but you cant really compare the Tourag to a CTD, it is a luxury vehicle with a sweet suspension system, I have been in the V8 model and it was real nice inside. I would buy one if I had an extra 80k that i didn't need too bad.

Yup, the V10 TDI is too rich for virtually everybody. However, VW is going to bring the smaller, more efficient V6 TDI in late '08. This news is according to Autoweek magazine: ... though VW will introduce a new 3. 0-liter V6 TDI engine late in 2008. This engine option should dramatically reduce the price of diesel admission by being “well under $50,000” .

Yes, I understand that VW had new common-rail diesel architecture coming in the passenger cars and got caught between the new 2007 emission laws and its C-R development program. Seems kind of dumb for VW to give up their diesels (a current marketing ace card) during this period of high fuel prices, but I guess they did the best they could, all things considered.

I saw a V-10 TDI on the road recently. It is amaxing how clean the damn thing runs! I was following it and he was hammering it pretty hard, Unlike the older diesels and the current gassers, there was NO smell to the exhaust! It is a sweet vehicle, but not worth that price!

BMW is supposed to be bringing TWO diesel engines in '08, as '09 models. According to the dealer, they are slated for the M3 and M5, as well as the 3 and 5 series cars. That will be NICE, as BMW builds some kickass inline 6 engines!

Those Touregs flew in the 500,Don't remember the exact # but had they been in the Trophy Truck class they would have finished in about 10th place,That my friend is way faster than any Dodge Gas or Diesel has ever run Baja.

T U O A R E G, (think it's pron. "tuhwareg") yeah, weird word, weird spelling, google it. It's a group of nomadic warrior tribes in the sahara desert that I wouldn't want to get in a fight with.

You can call it any thing you like. Its still a VW. Not for $70,000 or $50,000, maybe ( thats a stretch) $30,000 with a lifetime drivetrain warranty. I can buy a lot of fuel fer "Old Ugly" while I wait for the price to come down to reality! GregH

It is very clear you prefer utilitarian over style, comfort or performance :-laf

Define "reality".

That is pretty good. I would guess those are factory sponsored teams and those race rigs are probably far from what sits on the show room floor. The thing probably weighs half of what our work trucks with tractor engines weigh. I believe Robby Gordon drove one of those in Dakkar a few years ago. Did pretty well from what I remember. It is a nice ride and if I was made of money, I'd get one for the wife. But for now, we'll just stick with the Liberty CRD.

Reality?

Define "reality".

Reality is the difference between the Spin that the sales department wants to realize based on their market projections and the actual cost of manufacturing a product with a 10-15 % profit margin attached. Anything above that I consider supply and demand driven usury. :D GregH

PS. If you follow the markets, you may have noticed that APPLE dropped the cost of their I-phone from $600. 00 down to $300. 00 ( correction; $399. gh) and appologized to the higher paying customers and offered a $100 rebate. When a company recognizes that they may make more money in the long run by selling for less to more customers and have better market coverage or nitche domination, that is a pretty good example of reality in pricing.
