Trailer Brake Controller Installation

Hi everyone,

My Dodge has a factory tow package (I. E. hitch and 7 wire pluge).

Do I still need to by a trailer brake to mount inside the cab or does the tow package control the brake. I know there is no hand control in the cab. However if it does not control the brake how do yopu find the wire that goes to the plug under the dashbroard.

Thanks for yopu help.

Yes you still need a brake controller. There are many on the market and if you do a search on the here you will find many threads talking about the pro's and con's of each type. If I remember correctly the Jordan Ultima and the Tekonsha line were both very well thought of. There is a large plug under the steering column on the right side where the controller plugs into. I am sure somebody else will chime in with more specifics.

Barry is correct. You should have gotten a wiring plug with your truck. Plugs in to the connector Barry spoke of and has 4 wires coming of it. Wire it up and plug it in.

The 4 wires on controller are color coded and so are the wires on the harness. -- The have 4 of the same colored wires. HOWEVER THEY DID NOT GO BLUE TO BLUE, RED TO RED, for example.

God only knows why not. It would only make sense. But when I read the instructions on the Tenknosha I got, its different. So read the instructions carefully.

Thanks,

I found the plug. :) However the owner before me must have kept one half of it. So I will have to make due. Maybe I can get one from the dealer.

The female end is all you need(and get) the male end is located under the dash. The end you have is to connect to the wiring on the brake controler.

The male end that is wired to the truck is the only half that is there. The female end is no where to be found. Unless it is in a different location than the male end.

Thanks,

Re: WOW!

Be sure to follow the wireing directions. One time I pulled a DUH! and wired one same color to same color, after the smoke cleared, I needed a new controler. good thing the RV guy said "no problem, its still under warrantee!"

Wires

I kicked mine loose, too near the clutch, and decided to move it. Am I glad I did !!!. I just stuffed the wires in there and there must be a pretty sharp piece of steel because several of the wires were nicked badly enough to see the copper. I taped the bad spots then taped the entire assembly.

Lesson Learned
