Tow rating on a 96 -vs- 2000 + models

I was checking my manual, says 10k is the max towable ... 3:54 gears. What is it about the newer trucks that makes for the increased tow rating?

I haven't checked my 95 OM lately, but on my 98 12V I could gross 20K if I had 4. 10s and a manual transmission. I didn't want either so I got a #6 plate instead! The new trucks have better brakes, tires , auto trannies, frames, and hopefully rear ends to go with their "better" sticker prices.
