Anyone carry a tow strap under the seat??? If so what type works the best? The reason that I ask, there has been 2 situations that I wished that I had one. The last one was an old p/u stalled in the middle of the freeway just north of the 5 and 405 freeway in LA. It was an elderly couple and here I was with nothing to help with.

I have a 3" wide nylon strap that I have thought about having some loops sewn on the ends. I want it strong enough that if I need to pull another RV'r it will handle it.

Give me soom idea's... .

Thanks

Rick

You need a very heavy duty strap for that. I carry a 4" Keeper brand strap that is rated to 40,000 lbs (rule of thumb I've always gone by is to have a strap that is rated for 3x what you're pulling out). Expect to spend around $100 for a strap heavy enough for our trucks. Keeper is a very good brand, you'll want the ends to be doubled over and reinforced.

Recovery Strap

I use the 3"x30' 30,000lbs Pro Comp Recovery strap.

I've pulled a Swanns (GM HD Diesel) delievery truck without any problems. I also used it to tie down to a Hwy support beam to winch out a K-5 with my Warn 9500i. It is really stout and worth the money. Fits under the drivers seat no problem.

I also have a 40,000 # KEEPER strap, I've had it 10 years and hooked up just about everything you can imagine, including a 28,000# SKYTRAC, and pulled it outta the mud. It's got some miles on it,but it's still holdin' strong.

Snatch Strap

I use a 3"x30' Keeper too. It's pulled about everything I can think of even it's fare share of Furds and one Dmax. :D We used it last weekend to play "tug of war" again and my cusin Danny yanked the **** out of my friends CTD bent the bumper on the flatbed, but didn't even touch the strap. A yank like that on a chain would have snaped it into. and if you haven't ever seen that it's real scary. :(

Go for the snatch strap, most good 4x4 shops have them and even JC Witney has them.

Tow rope

I like my 1" double braided nylon tow rope with a loop in each

end it streches more than the straps do(less shock) and then

they shorten up like a giant bungee.

hmmm... . giant bungee, ... . SNAP!, ouch!:( :{

I need to get me a nice heavy yank/tow strap for the Dodge's toolbox. I had 2 in my old Toyota because I took it 4-wheeling all the time, and I broke both of them in stuck situations.

Oh well its 3AM here, I'll check out that 'site in the morning.

Hey Speedo, I agree, I love my nylon tow rope. Unfortunately I've had it forever, and am about due for a new one. Where did you get yours? I can't remember where I got mine, somewhere in North Dakota. I can't seem to find one anywhere else - the straps are easy enough to find, but the ropes are near impossible. Unless I'm just looking in the wrong place.

WHAT EVER YOU BUY, DO NOT BUY ONE WITH HOOKS ON THE END!!!! I know a family that includes a widow and two small children because of a hook on the end of a nylon tow strap that came loose from the vehicle being pulled and went through an expanded metal headache rack and through the man's skull. After this happened in my home town, I found out there were many incidents around the county of people being killed or injured when the nylon rope or cable broke and launched a clevis or chain hook. A prior poster talked of what happens when a chain breaks. A chain does not have any rebound when comparied with nylon straps/ropes or even cable. The old timers always layed a coat across a cable to dampen its rebound 'when" it broke.

TSC Tractor Supply Company has a good selection of recovery straps.

As mentioned above, avoid the straps with metal hooks on the ends.

Was pulling stumps with my Dad as a kid and a shackle came off and went through the front and out the back window on our Scout. Missed Dad's head by about 6". Nylon and metal don't mix well under load. When working on a ranch boss always had us toss a tarp over any rope, chain with rope, or strap and it would act as a parachute if something broke. It does work.

Whenever and whatever you're stretching... ..... cable, come along or Keeper... ... it's always a good idea to throw a tarp, blanket or coat... ... even a beach towel if that's all you have over the cable or strap to cut down on the slingshot effect.

One of my hot shot customers makes wire rope and slings for industry. Made me a killer strap a couple years ago and if anyone is interested let me know what length and I can get some priced and sent out ASAP. Mine is 30' long by 3" doubled with end loops. Rolls up to about 9"x16". I use it alot for everything from pulling myself and others out of dumb spots to yanking alot of heavy skids. Made of the same webbing for crane slings. They can get large sizes of nylon rope but it would require a few people going in together to get a reel and cutting lengths.

i have some 2x20 and a 2x40 recovery straps. the stretch kind. pulled two dump trucks with trailers... one at a time... . this past friday. these are 20000 pound webbing rated @ 6700 work load i think. although overloading the rating by far i pulled both trucks out with no problems. the trucks were empty and could not move at all. having the cummins pulling for you sure does help. :D Oo.

I had mine made locally here in Alaska.
