Trailer Fab questions

Has anyone towed with EZ and 275s on a ETC?I'm interested to hear what you guys with this setup have to say. I would really like to know how this setup works when pulling long steep grades. I live in Colorado, and go over the passes often. Are EGTs a problem?

Thanx

In the interest of getting a complete picture of the +'s and -'s of this setup, you should be aware that some of the ETH clutches can/do slip when towing heavy with the EZ/275 (or larger injector) combo - maybe this isn't as much of a problem with the ETC clutch.

If you're ready and willing to upgrade your clutch, go for it! :D If not, be careful - that's why I haven't upgraded from my stock injectors yet.

Big A... . talk to MLockner. He just upgraded to the Comp, but he has been using the 275's and EZ for a little while now. Even though he has an auto, he can probably give you a good run down on temps and stuff at our altitude.

EZ & 275s with ETC

I believe I read that the ETC's stock clutch actually holds better with this combination than the stock ETH clutch. If I remember correctly, the 6-Speed ETC clutch is the same as the 5-Speed.

Have a friend who has this combination and he has had no problems. He can slip the clutch with heavy loads and low RPMs, so you need to make sure you keep RPM's >1700 when towing, which is not difficult with a manual transmission. He said EGTs are not normally a problem, however, you should have gauges since it is possible for them to get pretty high.

Precisely my point. Forewarned is forearmed... :)

I understand the EZ is set at the second level from the factory. Are you guys leaving it there with the 275's or dropping the jumper down to the first setting. I currently have the EZ and stock injectors. I can put out some smoke if I get on it from a stand still.

Chris

Chris, I left my EZ jumper as is but I thought that was the hottest setting, which setting is the hottest ???

Also the 5speed clutch is I think 2mm less in diameter than the 6 speed is. and yes I had to upgrade myOEM clutch to a South Bend CON OFE , this happened with just the EZ and then I added the 275's later. All clutchs act differently and its my understanding that some guys with the ETH are having good luck with the OEM clutch holding just like some are not having much luck at all like me . go for the bomb and if the clutch fails than bomb it too... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ..... which EZ is hottest

I think all three settings give you the same HP & Torque, it just regulates what boost level the fueling comes in. I believe the low setting fuels at a lower boost as compared to the highest jumper. Not sure what benefit the three settings give. It would be a good question to post as a thread. I'm sure it's been explained before.

Chris

The EZ comes with the jumper in setting #3. Setting #3 starts fueling at 2 PSIG boost. This setting is supposedly for stock injectors, although I can still get some smoke coming away from a stop or at each shift when pulling our 5ver.

Setting #2 starts fueling at 10 PSIG boost. This setting is for larger injectors (like the 275's and higher) to minimize low-boost smoke.

Setting #1 starts fueling at 20 PSIG boost. This further reduces smoke by waiting for yet more boost before pouring the coals to 'er.

Peak BHP and torque are the same on all the settings, providing you're over the boost thresholds shown above. Otherwise, you're just getting an injection timing advance before the fueling comes in.

I've got an ETH w/EZ, DD2's and 4" Jardine and, knock on wood, the clutch has thus far been holding and temps have been fine. Haven't towed with the new injectors yet; however, next weekend will be the maiden voyage, with a lot of hill climbing, and I will post my experience.

NoCalH. O. Po, Please post you results after towing as I have the exact combination as you and like you I have not towed with the DD2's yet. I do go on vacation towing the Jeep and trailer over the Rockies and man I hope it stays cool.

AWESOME!

I've been towing our 9K 5er with 275's and EZ box for two summers now.

I run the EZ box on setting 3.

Trust me, it's an AWESOME setup. I have upgraded my clutch to the Southbend Con O, but I knew that was coming.

EGT's are'nt a problem for me. Only on SOME hills at high ambient temperatures can I hit 1200 degrees. Usually around 1150. That's fine by me.

It's a GREAT towing setup because it gives you tons of extra power without having to keep your eyes glued to your EGT guage.

I'd recommend it in a heartbeat.

:D

Thanks for all the quick replys. I thought I had read that it is probably the best towing setup, but I wanted to make sure before I make a decision. I really don't care to upgrade my clutch, but I guess if you're gonna play, you gotta pay.

Thanx
