I have a 99 dodge ram 2500 4x4 that I want to tow a 30 foot 5th wheel with. In order to install the Pullrite slider in my shortbed I will need to remove the rear air bags I had installed a while back. How necessary are the air bags with the 5th wheel about 2200 pin weight. over the rear axle. thanks ED

With my '95 2500 + 32 ft 5er I liked the air bags because I could maintain the truck's attitude - night driving, the headlights wouldn't hit the road without the bags inflated.

They probably helped handling some too, but not major.

I may still redesign the bags and relocated them, would be nice to have. I didn't think the 2nd gens had headlights or at least ones the light up the road. ED

My trailer, 29', probably has 1500 lbs +/- pin weight and that just levels the truck. The headlights are fine. On second thought, those headlights are nothing to write home about.

This question will give you many different opinions and has been asked a lot. You should be fine with it, but just because its a 30' 5ver doesn't make it OK or not OK. Hook it up as it is to be towed and take it to a certified scale. If your within your axle weight ratings, your legal. You can lighten the weight by keeping only enough water in your fresh water tank to use the toilet when travelling. The down side is no dry camping, if you keep it to the letter of the law. My Arctic Fox at 34' could be towed by my 2500 that way, but I have never dry camped with it before, and I sold my 2500 to my brother so its a mute point, just some food for thought. As far as the suspension springs are concerned it might sag a little, but if its within the axle ratings I don't see the need. However it would be great if you can get the Airbags reinstalled.

UPDATE, installed the pullrite yesterday, I have to say it was one of the first times the fit did not require me to fabricate or adjust the parts, went in smooth. and even though when I called pullrite they said the air bags had to go they fit back just fine.
