Towing Dilemma

Bought new Tahoe toybox, weight 7400 empty, 1380 hitch weight. We want to add two quad ATVs. Specs say we can tow 12400 w/1500 hitch weight. We thought we were way under and ok, but don't seem to have enough power w/95 2500 12 valve, 354 rearend, auto trans.

Am considering solutions - fix? modify? buy another truck? Thoughts and suggestions WELCOME! Help help help!:

BOMB it, its so easy to make extra power with these trucks and cheap too. An extra 100hp can be had for maybe $700. 00, cheaper if you shop and wait for specials. Maybe 4 hours work. BUT if you do add the 370 injectors and fuel plate you will need at least an EGT gauge so if you like your truck and dont want to spend a lot of money B. O. M. B this one. You will be able to tow that trailer like a little utility trailer.

I'd better add that you're going to stir up significant temperatures in that automatic.



Get a transmission temperature gage ASAP. And drive by it, or you'll lower the life of the transmission.



One way to get the transmission to stay cooler is to add-on another cooler. I have the Mopar under-the-bed cooler, but they're out of stock. Others can advise on what they've added, or you can search.



Attention to the transmission can get more of the horsepower to the ground, just like adding more horsepower to the engine. I've gone to a stiffer torque converter and modified valve body (see signature). It made a lot of difference.



If you want to sell the truck and go to a manual transmission version, you can skip this upgrading.

Get a good air filter, a #6 cam plate, guages, and make sure your pump is timed optimally.
