Automatic Question

REAL oil pressure guage?

I read a very simple question over at DTR today that got me thinking.

When I took deliver of my truck in late winter of '03, there wasn't much of a choice in performance upgrades ... ... ... so I bought the EZ.

Since then I've been sitting back and watching. Mostly waiting for the arrival of the Edge timing/duration contibution. I don't know what I was waiting for, but I was let down in the end. No box has really jumped out and said "come buy me"!

Anyway, the question I read was "why can't I just run injectors" ... ..... and the light went on!!!!

Okay, the early fueling is too much for the stock huffer, but I can buy a new turbo. Since I'm more into towing than drag racing, this seems way better than any box I've read about.

As far as boxes go, the EZ seems to mimic the stock torque curve more than any other box that I've seen. And, that would give me the boost fooling I'll need. Plus the fact that the extra pressure would give better atomization in a bigger injector.

What makes the timing and duration of an aftermarket box better than stock programming?

For towing in a dually, it seems on the surface, that the injector/turbo/pressure box is better than the high horsepower pressure/timing/duration boxes guys are running in the short wheel base light to light machines.

What am I missing?

Excellent question and observations!

I hope your post generates some discussion. Us towing guys need a different slant on performance than the boy-racers. We can't afford to have turbo lag cause problems on shifting our 6-speeds. Since we have the engine under load for much, much longer periods of time, EGTs seem to be power limiting. Racers don't spend five minutes pulling a load up a steep grade.

A broad torque band seems the name of the game for us.

I feel the same way. Although my rig is a SB 2500, I'm not interested in racing. I pull a 30' tongue pull toy hauler on mountain roads with long, steep grades. My weight hovers around 17K to 18K depending on what bikes/wheelers are in there. I also have been waiting for the box that will give me the 60-100HP and X amount of torque for more than a few seconds without sending the egts through the roof. From reading on here it seems that without a turbo this is not possible. If I spend any money on power enhancements I want to be able to use it for as long as the hill lasts. Hopefully someone will have something to offer here.

I just installed a Crank position sensor from ROKK tech, and so far I am extremely pleased. I am running the EZ, and prior to the sensor, I towed in the mid position on the 3 position switch. (More fueling) However, after the sensor install, I am having better performance on the lowest setting, and lower EGT's. I am considering unpluging the EZ all together. I am on the first leg of a month vacation, and will be pulling lots of grades. I am pulling a 30' fiver, about 12K plus the dually coming in at 8600 pounds. More to report later... ... ...

Subby,

I didn't mean to imply the all SWB trucks were used for drag racing, nor am I at all opposed to drag racing a diesel. In fact I think it's pretty cool to watch a 12 second diesel powered truck.

But, for my use, I'd like to have a flatter, broader torque band. It seems that all of the boxes are peaky/pipey compared to stock. The EZ seems to follow the stock torqe curve more closely than any box that I've seen, and it can even feel a little peaky at times.

I'd just like to get y'alls opinion on the injector/turbo/pressure combination. It just seems to me it should be better suited to heavy hauling than a high horsepower box.

If you get the chance, you might want to try a TST

I love the adjustability of mine and I am towing 30' 5er and my truck is set up as in sig. below

from a reliability standpoint, i would theorize that upgraded injectors and turbo ONLY would be better. that is, there are no NEW electrical devices that could possibly fail.

you would get the advantage of additional fuel, that most boxes provide with stock injectors, without the box.

not sure how you would get around the boost sensor though should you upgrade the turbo to one that will make higher boost. without a boost fooler for the map sensor you would get overboost codes i assume. the boxes handle this issue easily.

i am not a fan of any device that raises rail pressure. seems to put too much stress on the CP3 and pressure relief valve. still evaluating those devices based on information posted here.

as far as timing/duration boxes only, i have a definate gain in mileage and power with just the timing. assuming you drive easily, with TST on 3,2 and never allow the truck to smoke, you would tend to minimize the addition of duration.

so basically i am thinking you can't get timing advance or map sensor fooling with just injectors and turbo. you will get additional fueling though.

does this help?? now what have i missed?
