Can anyone tell me how to open up the plastic arms on my towing mirrows? it looks like they are snaped together but I do not want to force them apart.

I don't think you can, at least when i tryed it was an internal app... So went and got new mirror's... one side had been "hit"...

Towing mirror disassembly Procedure

I am familiar with two styles, don't know how many more may exist. Move the mirror all the way to the up position, and see if there are two wires protruding down, if so that is the bottom of a large snap ring that goes around the plastic clips and locks it in place. Squeeze the two ends together and push them forward to unlock. Grab one at a time with a pair of needle nose pliers and push to the outside and to the rear, this will lock them out of the way and the mirror pops right out.

If you dont see any wires place a putty knife btween the mirror and the case (outer edge) and gently pry the mirror toward the door, you will feel it slide and unlock, at that point the mirror should fall out into your hand.

I can tell you from experience this procedure will do you no good! There is nothing in there you can repair and if you could you can't get parts! It is not worth the effort.

I basically agree with the messages above. Don't do this unless you really need to. But if you have to... .....

I got the mirrors apart. It's pretty complicated, and if not very careful, you can damage the plastic clips that hold the 2 halves together. First, remove the mirror from the truck, it is help in place by 3 nuts. Then, you need to take out the mirror piece out of the main assembly. If you adjust the mirror all the way in one direction, you need to remove the clip, mirror and wiring harness. You'll then need to remove the mirror body / assembly before the two plastic halves can be removed. The main body is held in place by a heavy duty ring clip (you will see once you remove the mirror), you need to pry the teeth of the clip with a screw driver to get it off. Once remove the main body, you need to pry one of the halves off (this is where the damage may occur), as the clips are of the plastic male/female type. One of the plastic halves fastens via screws to the internal steel beam. The other is help in place via the locking clip mechanism. If you damage one off the female clip, just epoxy back into place, as this only holds the plastic half in place. Once you pry the one half is off, screws hold the other half to the steel beam.

When you remove the large ring clip that holds arm onto door mount, use extreme caution.

There is a large and very compressed spring that will pop when clip is removed.

Mine blew apart while trying to remove it, and spring hit windshield (I was working on driver's seat) and busted it. I had to replace windshield, and thank godness I didn't get it on my face, it would have hurt A LOT.

Be careful.....
