I'm getting the itch for a new ride. I really like the new body styles, 2010 to 2014. When I compare the tow ratings of the various trucks 2500 and 3500 the earlier trucks, 10' and 11' the ratings are much lower than more recent trucks. What is the major differences. I thought it was almost the exact same truck with a few minor differences. Can anyone give me some insight why?

At the roll-out of the 2013.5 trucks at CMEP plant in Columbus IN there was a discussion on the frame changes. The 3500HD frame was redesigned to allow for heavier tow loads and the front portion of the frame has a frame section that now interferes in the oil filter removal from the bottom. I also believe the frame material was changed to a higher strength steel and the rear section was changed to allow a hitch mounting from the factory. Just some of the changes

The power train was also changed to provided improve cooling for the auto-transmissions either the AISIN and or the 68RFE along with improve cooling of the engine for the increase loads. The engine was also change to provide coated pistons and a redesigned cooling oil jet for the piston. there were other changes to but this is what I remember on the engine.

Another Item was the rear axle was changed to a slightly larger differential; I believe this is an 11.8" now and the axle tubing was changed in stiffness with additional bracing.

2012 to 2013 was a big change. The 2012 3500 single rear wheel became the 2013 2500 and tow capacities went up. I believe the 2013 3500 dually went to 38K GCVWR properly equipped. Also power was increased and def being used. I think, and dont quote me, the 11.8 rear axle is only for the 38K rated 3500 dually. all others get the 11.5 rear.

If your looking for factory tow ratings, 2013 and up are much better.

The trucks with the new frames can be considered as totally new trucks disguised with the bodies that came out in 2010. They may look the same but there is no comparison.

Was the 2012 SRW 3500 chassis any different than the 2012 2500 chassis? And does this mean the 2500 chassis was improved in 2013 over the 2012 2500?

IMHO after years of working on these trucks. Go with a 13+ even if it is only for the less cels that I see

Newsa, my comparison is based on a co-worker who owned a 2012 RAM 3500 longhorn quad cab short box 4x4. We put our trucks side by side and checked as much as one could and could physically, and could find no difference. If the tensile strength of the frame was higher, I don't know. One thing was for certain, tires, frames, punch holes in the frames, brakes and all were identical except that I had a DEF tank and its related components and he did not. I got 17MPG, he got 12.and so on..

My 2012 3500 Dually MAX tow, I was able to access the oil filter from below like my 2005 dually. Apparently the 13 3500's frames have changed to the point you cant access the oil filter from below.

No; the frame on the 2500 is the same between the 2012 and 2013 MY. See issue 78 pages 42-45 about the new 2013.5 trucks. Ram pointed out that the 3500 SRW frame changes would carry over to the 2500HD in 2014 MY; but I have not seen the frame to agree with their claim. Maybe Bob4X4 or Sag2 can concur on the frame changes.

Sorry Jim I've been too busy doing updates (lol)to pay attention to the frame nuances. Except the size of shock that can be squeezed through the frame cutout.
I've heard sag2 is retiring soon......
