First time load for the HX40

yep, been there and no problem! Montana 3400RL 5er behind me. By reading your sig your truck is no problem either! I would like to know how the pro weld cooler does? Do not by pass Monument Valley it is gorgeous and spend time in Moab. I am now on my way back to Co. and will be towing this same direction next week. Now is the panhandle of Fla. Safe travels

As Nunya said you shouldnt have any problems. Are you heading east on I-70 to Moab or west on I-70 to Moab? If heading east the San Rafael swell will give your brakes a run for their money coming down off it towards Green River through Spotted Wolf Canyon. The grade is steep, long and curvey. You should have no problems just be aware. Once you head south to Moab off 70 assumming you are on I think it is 191 you will have a couple of decent downhills closer to Moab but should present no problem at all. Once south of Moab there again a few decent grades most are relatively short but closer to Monument Valley you will encounter a few longer ones both up and down. From there to Flagstaff no big whoop a few ups and downs but if I recall nothing big or iffy.

If you are spending anytime in Moab make sure and get up to Dead Horse Point State Park. Sunrise or sunset would be best but an incredible scene anytime of day. Obviously Arches NP is a must do if there. Canyonlands NP Island in the Sky District is worth a peek as well. South of Moab Canyonlands NP Needles District is definitely worth the short side trip to have a look see. The needles district unhook the 5'r at the visitor center and drive back to Elephant Hill. If you are into hiking at all or even if you arent at Elephant hill take the hiking trail(not the 4x4 trail) and if you only hike a few hundred yards you will be in a different world. The beginning is a bit steep but very short once on top the hiking is very easy and well worth a 30 minute stroll (or longer).

By the way be very careful of your eyes. The scenery is eyeball bustin.

The whole trip is planned as Yellowstone, Devil's Tower, Col. Springs then Monument valley. Jake works great, but haven't towed with the trans cooler yet. Really looking forward to the scenery.

I don't know which way you are going on 70. North or South. If you do plan to go thru Moab please do not miss the shortcut from Moab that follows the big muddy river (Colorado). I think it is Hwy. 128. It follows the Colorado thru many canyons. It is one of the most pretty routes we followed. 128 ties back into I-70 about exit 204 if my map is correct. A local at Gunnison told me about the road. Have safe travels. You will have no problems on 128.

Yeah 128 is a great scenic road. If you are heading west on I-70 it will be approx 15-20 miles east of the Moab exit. The first 10ish miles you will be thinking where the heck did these guys send me but then you will drop down to the river and follow it. The road is not overly wide and doesnt always have nice wide shoulders but as mentioned you shouldnt have any problem. I always take that way in or out. There are actaully 2 exits for it. IIRC one is labeled hwy128 the other just says to Cisco. The hwy 128 exit is about 5 miles west of the first one and you do a little bit of backtracking but not much if taking the one labed 128 vs the Cisco exit. Mileage wise it is shorter to take 128 than I-70 to hwy 191 time wise is about the same maybe a few minutes longer.

You're going to love the trip

The RV park at monument valley is a little tight, but absolutely spectacular and not terribly expensive. South from Monument Valley, you'll get onto US 160 headed west toward Cameron. There's an RV park in Tuba City that I've never stayed at. Try to schedule lunch at Tsegi, in Tsegi Canyon. It's all good, but their Navajo Taco is outstanding. At Cameron, there's a small RV park across the road from the trading post. Few amenities, and sporadic reports of midnight noise. The Cameron trading post, as well as the one at Tuba City is worth a visit. There are several RV parks in Flagstaff. Black Bart's only has 20 amp and 50 amp hookups. I haven't stayed in Flagstaff in a long time.

I made this trip, from Phoenix as far as the LaSal Cutoff to Naturita, Colorado last September towing a 27 foot TT. The roads that you will be encountering will all be good. Watch your speed across the Navajo Reservation. Limits are enforced, and with good reason. The 15 mph school zones are enforced big time. If you are going south of Flagstaff, PM me for more local information.
