I know that this subject has been asked a million times lately, but I can't seem to find an answer that suits my needs. I've been away from the TDR forums for a while and there are so many new turbo options out there that I'm having to learn all about them and what is best suited for what. I'm looking to replace my current turbo (hx-40 w/16 cm housing) for something that spools better and will help keep my egts in check while towing. Right now I have a Drag Comp and plan be getting a set of 90~100 hp injectors sometime in the near future. I don't plan on going any higher in power after that. So what are your opinions on what will be the best turbo for that power level that spools well and will have exceptable towing egts? I know I will probably have to sacrifice some top end power for this, but I'd rather have it work down low than gain a few horses on the top end.

ive run a variety of different type turbos from off the shelf to custom made and have had some good luck and some bad luck out of both. but to be perfectly honest right now I am running an hx-40 straight off an ISC motor (new common rail 8. 3l Cummins) and as dumb as it sounds this has worked the best for me. I have been hauling hay and equiptment around southern kansas all summer and in some nasty heat at times. And this turbo seems to be the best so far especially with my set up. It even seems to spool up relatively good when empty. I can't complain so far.

just my . 02

Dan, that is pretty much the exact turbo that I've been leaning toward. I'm not sure if I want to try the 12 or 14 ext. housing, but with trying to make it spool at lower rpm's than with the 40 I have I was thinking the 12. Just as long as it doesn't hurt the top end too much. If the 14 doesn't affect how well it spools too much, but lets it breathe much better at high rpm's, then I'd probably go that way. Around what rpm does your's start to make boost?

onestackdram, I'm trying to get away from 40's. My main concern is quicker spooling (and little better flow overall would be nice) and since my 40 is a Piers that has mods to help it spool better, I doubt that the 40 from a common rail 8. 3 would be much, if any better. Now I can totally believe that it may be better than an older stock 40, but probably not a modded one. I do appreciate the insight though.

I'm not stuck on the PS 62, so any and all suggestions are welcome.

I look at the 12 vs 14 housing debate like this. If you are going to be WOT most of the time, you'd probably like the 14 best. In my case, I really like low rpm spoolup and spend less than 1% of my drive time WOT. Pegged to the floor, I've never seen over 1250 anyways, but keep in mind I have a mild street cam and I don't have the pump wire tapped. I can't give you a rpm for spool up off the top of my head. Give me some time and I can get that info, my truck is a weekend grocery getter. :D I do know that I would never ditch this turbo to go back to my old twin setup. But keep in mind I rarely am WOT. I just find a snappy low to mid rpm truck is way more fun for daily driving and towing versus a lag pig with monster top end.

In terms of spool up, I can tell you that my truck absolutely annihilates the only HX40 equipped Dodge I ever rode in. He only had 100hp injectors though.

Dan

I have a 62/14 for sale with about 4,600 miles on it i tow a 5er 14,000 lbs no problem let me know if your interested cell #215-791-0277

Thanks again Dan. That's pretty much how I see the 12 vs. 14 housing decision too. I'd really appreciate it if you could find out when it starts to spool. I don't recall the exact rpm for when my 40 spools either, but it's in the 1700 rpm range I believe. Maybe a little sooner, but I'm not sure.

The PS 62/12 was near the top of my list of turbos I was interested in when I started this thread, but I'm not dead set. How do the HTT turbos compare? Quality and performance wise that is.

Just for comparison I checked when my hx-40 spools today. The boost starts building slowly at 1500. At 1600 it has reached 10 lbs. but it's still climbing slow, then around 1700 its building boost at full tilt. This is with my Drag Comp on 5x5 and nothing else.

My turbo lites at 1600, comp on 3X3 i can see 50 lbs of boost, RIVER CITY TURBO built this turbo for me last year... . my new turbo will be sent out on the 30 :) :)

That's just the thing, I don't plan on having a lot of power. And I currently and don't plan on towing with the Comp on anything above the first power level. So twins aren't necessary in my situation. If I had money for twins I'd save it and use it on a cam instead and stay in the mid 400 hp power level. I'm not saying that twins wouldn't be nice, and I sure wouldn't turn anybody down that tried to give me a pair. :)

His turbo is an htb2 62/14 if you read his sig... ... ... ... you can see what I have and I can tell you that off the line it is a little laggy but once it goes it goes and leaves skid marks in your pants. I think you might be happier with a 12cm housing.
