Towing with early 91

I am trading my 92 W250 for a 91 D350 + some boot. Both are set up for towing, but the other guy needs a 4x4, and I really need the duals and extra 2 leafs. This is my first experience w/o the intercooler. WHat do I need to do to keep EGTs under control? Besides the $800 intercooler. WHat is the approx max power I can make until I run out of room?I will be towing a 40' GN flatbed, with about 8-9 tons of hay on it. First thing will be an exhaust brake, and then maybe a PDR HX35-16. It has a straight pipe and the kink over the axle will be removed pronto. ANy of you who have installed a Banks cooler in your later 1st gens, and need extra garage space, let me know, I may be interested in taking it off your hands.

Keep in mind that 89-91. 5 trucks have the vertical flow radiator and usually have more cooling problems than crossflow 92-93 trucks when towing. A 16cm housing is a must at this elevation and would lower egts. When I ran an open 3" exhaust it helped lower my max. egts and took longer to reach them also.

On another note I just bought a pair of factory overload springs w/brackets and bolts at a junkyard from an 80s Dodge D 350 for $20.

BTW I have an older style BD inline 3" exhaust brake w/40,000 miles w/a back pressure guage for sale cheap. Delivery possible.

Upgrade Radiator

If you have to upgrade the radiator I have the info and drawings to do it and would be happy to send it to you. I did the upgrade to my 90 W250 back in November of 2001 and am very happy with the cooling system. I have since upgraded the core support and have the lower mounting bracket for the radiator that I could send you also. Send me an email at -- email address removed -- if you are interested. If you don't want the intercooler from roadhawg I'll take it.

Medium to heavy hauling with the early '91's, especially if any grades are involved, WILL demand a radiator upgrade, period!



I got by for a while by having a coolent distribution baffle installed inside the radiator top tank in my '91 to better distribute flow across the width of the radiator, and the addition of Redline "Water Wetter" to provide better cooling - if you're hauling isn't TOO frequent or heavy, that might do it for you.



But the load of our 7000 lb fiver in Sierra grades was just too much, and I finally surrendered and installed a new '93 radiator - the cost for the whole setup, doing it myself, ran just under $200 total...



Oh yeah - and I had the Banks intercooler and exhaust system as well, and the pump tweaked - towards the last, also had a propane setup - power was NO problem!

BTW- I forgot to mention- the radiator HAS been upgraded. It looks bigger than the one in the 92 I traded him. THey both run about the same as for power and off the line get up, though with the 4. 10s, I can peel the tires in 2nd, whereas I couldnt in the 92. I forgot how much fun the 2wd regular cabs are to drive. Nice ride, too; esp with the Ford seat in it (dont ask me, came that way). Runs down the highway good, too. Cant wait to tow, but will probably go with the 93 until I get guages, as I KNOW it doesnt hit 1000 deg post turbo, and that is lugging the SNOT out of it to get to 900 or so. I will get to you guys who have the parts I am interested in.

Almost forgot.....

It has been a long day. But, I changed speed sensors in it because the speedo needle was all over the place, and noticed it is now about 16% fast. Do the 4. 10s have different sensors than the 3. 54s? Or did he get the wrong part when he changed the elbow adaptor? Guess I could call Dodge, but would rather not if I can. They have trouble looking up parts for my old beaters . THanks guys, and keep up the good work on this site. Hope to see a few of you around here and there.
